Nah, each person should be able to set their own. That would mean you would have to pay to actually send me an unsolicited message.

But what if that message if for the greater good of yours or the community as a whole? Messaging should be allowed on steemit. I am against on this 'transfer money while you talk through memo' thing. there are many things, some urgent as well, which need to be discussed. So, I guess there should be a message option with a block option so that you can block those who are spamming your message box.

Messaging is of course allowed. But people should have ownership and control of their own attention span. For a person who has a thousand people seeking their attention every day, that person should be able to filter out those who weren't willing to pay for their attention. That same person could lower their price to allow access to their attention if they personally want to make it more accessible so that they can better the community as you say.

But that should be a choice.

The idea I read a few years ago was to only charge for unsolicited (advertisement/spam) messages. Everyone else on your preapproved contact list could message at low/zero cost.

Users could earn money this way, or shut off spam completely.

I absolutely agree with this. I once reached out to a very well respected whale on Discord, unsollicited, but with a good reason and the response was very positive. But, once again, as a user you should be able to set from who you'd want to accept direct messages (only followers, everyone, or maybe even other settings). We do not want to force our most esteemed community members to suffer huge amounts of spam.

Great idea
