Incentives to Hold or Buy SteemPower (1) : Steem Cloud Storage

I think what most of these crypto storage coins don't realize is that 99.9% of people do not care about having decentralized storage, when a usb drive or memory stick does a better job

Hi craig, people who upload their personal data to all social networks like you are currently doing with pictures of your wife and your kids, there is no need to have redundant copies of this data under own access control, because you have backups on the social networks. Then a usb drive is sufficient for data transfer.

But if you care more about privacy, you want to have multiple copies of your pictures/videos on different locations. Currently I deposit multiple harddrives on different locations and every time I visit one of these locations, I make a backup. In this scenario decentralised storage clouds are a much cheaper and user friendly option.

the only social network i use is steemit

A USB drive is certainly not a competing idea to cloud storage like Dropbox or Google Drive. While you might not care about the decentralization aspect, there certainly are many more than you who do. People can speculate about the value of these storage blockchain's tokens but in the end they will only be useful when there are people building enterprise size applications atop them. That is only really happening with respect to Ethereum and IPFS.

enterprise size applications atop them is a great use case, and by then decentralized storage will be a default blockchain feature, not something that is speculated on or worth trading

You say default feature like these things can just be updated. BTC blocks are full so badly that transactions don't go through, yet the protocol shows no signs of a simple, one-line update. This is why Ethereum is such a promising project, there is no need for many other chains when one can do everything better.

Well the Steem governance is unique and allows for very coordinated hardforks. And look at that storage URL, IPFS making a appearance again!!!

People will probably be more interested in decentralised storage, if the security issues with cloud storage becomes better known.AS for usb drives and memory sticks, they will be more expensive,as the decentralised storage would be able to push down costs by economies of scale. I'm constantly running out of storage space,so I need storage. And with decentralised storage, I have acess to my files wherever I go, and I can't lose it.

the laptop I use is the cheapest one I could buy, comes with 5gb free space, and I use a memory stick if I need more. Decentralized storage being worth money is crack pot idea, and can only thrive in the cryptocurrency bubble, but not for for long

There is a demand for it. Maybe by crackpots like me..and also by companies, who are already using cloud services, because it's simpler, and would prefer it to be decentralised, based on the security prblems with centralised cloud storage.

What. Are. You. Talking. About.
People are already building enterprise applications on decentralized storage. Not at all crack pot. Not sure why you call it a bubble. Burstcoin, now that is a bubble.

true, burstcoin is a bubble on it's own, just starting to blow up with a very long way to go if it pops

Interesting idea. Resteemed.

Danke Dir!

Sehr gerne :-)

You are proposing a decentralized storage solution that is hosted by the witnesses of which the memory capacity is distributed to all Steemians in proportion to their SP holdings. I like this idea very much!
I understand that an economy can evolve from this where unused memory space is lent to those who require more of it. My first question though is, how are the witnesses reimbursed for this hosting service in the first place? I´m asking because the SP of the users doesn´t actually pay for anything unless it´s liquified and transferred.

Hi Shaka,

I have not thought in detail how witnesses could be paid for providing the storage.

A possible option is, that you get some free storage in function of your SP-Holdings, for example

  • you have 1000 SP, you get 1 GB for free
  • you have 10000 SP, you get 5 GB for free
  • you have 100000 SP, you get 25 GB for free
    and so on.

If you need more space, you have to pay a weekly/monthly fee to the witnesses. Below for instance the current storage prices of other cloud storage providers

Very interesting idea! You are a visionary.
I have annother idea to reduce liquid steem: 10% power down tax sent to @null.

Thank you. 10% power down tax? Hmm :-)

great post @twinner - i believe in it but maybe i am too in experienced yet - i always power up and probably might even consider to do 100% power payouts next month too.

I am a relative new user. But I thought that I understood that Steem Power already has a purpose. SteemPower controls how much my payout is if I vote on a content right?

Yes, that's right - but it may be not enough.

I really think that the servers should truly be dedicated to the steemit service. There is no need for another blockchain storage clone.

Thank you. As I mentioned in my Post, Andreas Patersson favours the Sia-Network at the moment. But of course there are other coins like Burst.
