Another SMT On The Way: Making Upvotes More Valuable

There is great debate about what constitutes "quality content" and the "fairness" of the STEEM upvoting system.

Soon, we are going to have an alternative that could help offset that a bit.

@flauwy is in the process of putting together his 1UP system of curating. This will be a SMT that will overlay upon the STEEM blockchain. Tied into the Hivemind and Communities features, it will enable enhanced upvoting in a way that benefits not only content creators, but also the voters themselves.

Using a Smart Media Token, upvotes will be cast in a curation trail. This will be an account based system where stake does not enter the equation for voting power. Where size of account does matter is in the voting order of the curation trail. This is a reverse system where the smallest accounts are placed first to give them the greatest curation amounts.

The last vote placed on the trail will be the 1UP account itself, which will have the greatest voting power. Hence, all votes ahead of it will garner a greater amount of the curation rewards for that post.

Like we are seeing with the @steemhunt project, people are going to receive payouts in a couple different forms. Since 1UP is a layer built on top of STEEM, the existing STEEM reward pool is still in effect. Authors will receive their normal payout. The same holds true for curators.

The difference is that, like @steemhunt, we see another token paid to both parties. Authors will get rewards from 1UP based upon the total number of upvotes whereas the curators do the same. As mentioned, the reverse payout for curation seeks to help the smaller accounts.

As the community features are implemented on the STEEM blockchain, this will allow groups to form their own voting trails. It will give incentive to communities to reward the better content. At the same time, it provides people with the motivation to start curating.

The 1Up system will mirror STEEM in that the voting system is the same regarding voting power. Hence, there is a limit to what the system can vote for on a daily basis. This will make the votes that are given more valuable. The chance to get a nice payout from this system could motivate content creators to focus more on quality. Also, joining communities who will also have a large 1UP stake in their accounts means that one will profit more by being in a voting trail such as this.

I said for a long time that STEEM is a compounding ecosystem. Here is a prime example of how one's present activity will be further rewarded with bigger payouts. Shifting the focus away from using votes in manners that do not reward content is the goal. This system has the opportunity of creating a bit more balance. Penetrating the system at the community level means that there will be greater incentive for people to get involved with those that create quality content. In addition, it will create a snowball effect on certain communities since the value of upvotes will start to grow rapidly. People will naturally gravitate towards those groups that experience that since they have more value.
