Could "Steemit 2.0" (MEOS?) Destroy Steemit?

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

Yesterday @theycallmedan posted a interesting pod cast about MEOS vs. Steemit. https://steemit.com/dtube/@theycallmedan/oq7g9q1o
While he made a very good case why steem would not only not be destroyed but thrive there are some implications that - due to my humble opinion - he did not point out.

So lets start with a short description what the rumors say MEOS could be..
MEOS could be a social network / profile network involving KYC/identity proof based on the EOS blockchain.
So far so good... but to understand the differences and implications for both steem and EOS one has to get one step back and take a bird's eye view of the issue.
Brandan and Dan seem to have come to the conclusion that a KYC process is paramount for any future professional use of EOS. This makes a lot of sense as if you have a clear KYC process you can run all kind of economic transactions on the EOS blockchain with very little effort and at the same time have the guarantee that in the case your access codes/passwords are compromised there is a way to start a reset process.
On the other hand other social networks, news feeds and commercial pages have a huge problem with fake accounts, hijacked accounts, fake news and especially fake reviews.
There is a very good youtube video explaining this enormously huge problem - for me this was eye opening.

So this could be a way to bring trust into your blockchain / system. And if you have this it is possible to do all kind of economic transactions on the blockchain, even replace or add a credit card. There are even rumors that a cooperation between EOS, Apple pay and a credit card vendor could be announced soon.

So this is the one side of the coin and I have to say this looks very well for EOS.

But what does this mean for steem?
@theycallmedan made a very good point about short and long term motivation of stakeholders, especially whales in a proof of stake environment.
On the other hand it is known that Dan made several comments in regards to bots being bad for steem.
And that is a point I truly understand. So will MEOS then have no bots at all? No, I do not believe so, but due to the KYC process they can allow only those bots that are beneficial to MEOS and keep everything else out - KYC as a gatekeeper.

While - for me - this is the biggest threat in regards to steem and steemit, you also have to look on the back side of this all. Once data is written on the blockchain, it is written on the blockchain for ever. And while MEOS might plan to allow external viewers only access to data you want to show them there is no way to stay anonymous.
Just think about those crazy party pics of your college time you happily erased form FB bevor applying to that law firm.

A very high percentage rate of blockchain users favor the decentralized aspect of decentralized blockchains and databases with no restrictions, censorship possibilities and centralized gatekeeper functions.
While the above is all fine and important for commerce, this is not the case for free speech, personal freedom and creativity.
So I believe many will seek the possibility to stay anonym and hence there is still demand for steem - actually I believe through mass adoption of other blockchains steem will even thrive much further.

At the end IMHO MEOS is a great way to bring EOS to a commercial level and to the end user and world wide distribution. And while professional content producers most likely will prefer EOS/MEOS to steem this is unlikely for the current and future user base of steem. So at the end you will probably have to have both: steem/steemit and EOS/MEOS.
We have to talk however about (voting)bots again as this is the main argument why steemians could leave for MEOS.

Impressive investigation and arguments!
Time will tell ... I - personally - still believe in STEEM/SBD/STEEMIT and many of the dapps around STEEM.
Especially steem-engine.com could bring a change.

We need to get the world to know about steem and its potential!
This is a hell of a job. Especially the pitty task for beginning steemians to stay even if the first months are not easy if you do not bring 200+ followers with you.

Thanks for this informative post and

STEEM ON!!!

I tried Trybe but I'm not sure if those tokens are even tradeable yet.

Thanks for pointing out in this direction @solarwarrior

Gonna watch Dan video now and sleep :)

cheers

It's me again @solarwarrior :)

My opinion is that Steemit is already having very difficult learning curve and MEOS does seem to be even more difficult. That can be a real problem and huge obstacle on the way to mass adoption.

Wouldn't you agree on that?

Yours
Piotr

I would yes and no...
IMHO steem has now a three years track record and you can't really say that everything has been optimal for its development.. but its very persistent and still here.. so whenever the next bull market comes.. (and I believe it will come sooner or later) it will be ready to rock...
and EOS (and subsequently MEOS) has such fire power behind it.. more than a billion dollars spent on developers... I believe MEOS is an important step for mass market commercialization and adaption...
and last but not least I find it interesting that both are born by the same "parents"..
if I had to make a bet now.. ... from all cryptos I would bet on EOS and steem... and that's what I am actually doing.. all this mining based cryptos are just not sustainable.. crypto 2.0 will be the future...
I believe you could think of eos/meos vs steem/steemit a bit like microsoft vs. linux...

Dear @solarwarrior

Thank you for your prompt reply.

more than a billion dollars spent on developers ...
I believe MEOS is an important step for mass market commercialization and adaption...

Huge money doesn't yet mean, that product will be adopted by masses. Right now what I know is that I asked several people (wise people I would say) if they understand what EOS really is about and they all shared similar lack of understanding of this project. EOS is just not created for "normal humans" and it lack simplicity.

When Steve Jobs presented first Iphone several years back, he focused on promoting simplicity. That allowed mass adoption.

I have serious doubts that MEOS will attract "regular joes". But who knows, I may be as well wrong. Time will tell.

I believe you could think of eos/meos vs steem/steemit a bit like microsoft vs. linux...

Great comparison. And EOS/MEOS is exactly like Linux. So much better in every aspect, except of simplicity. Perfect tool for professionals only.

Cheers
Piotr
