Steemit needs more ways to earn rewards than writting articles
As Dan said, the goal is not to have everyone blog but it is to put steem into as many hands as possible.
By only rewarding people for writting stories steemit won't appeal to the vast majority of the people.
People should be paid for doing many different things that adds value, predicting the future correctly like augur does on ethereum, or people could be paid to fill survey, or even play games.
Even a daily steemit lottery could be interesting, we could allocate 500$ to the lottery and make a happy user every day. And there people have one more reason to stick around..
I think the funny part of making money is lacking on steemit, it needs more diversification

Steem could have a section of questions and answers, where the best answer would get paid.
I agree - I just joined, but I was thinking there would be more content along the lines of Q&A. I see a lot of articles and blog type posts.

The more ways people can get involved the better, not everyone is interested to write articles.

This is a very good idea, I hope something like this will be built and integrated into the main site.
The key to solve user retention is diversification, the more opportunities to earn something the more users steemit will attract.
There are lots of other ways to earn money. If you like a post before it goes viral (sort of what you are talking about with predicting the future) and you can also get paid for comments, or for flagging spam/plagiarized content.
