Witness Stats: How many users are actually voting for a witness?

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

There is a lot of talk about voting on witnesses these days.

Since @lukestokes wrote his post How Many Steemians Are NOT Voting for a Witness? I Found the Answer! a few weeks back I feel that there is much more talk about it in the community, but I might have a skew view as a witness myself.

I decided to run some numbers myself and see how many users were actively voting today. I'm excluding all accounts with a reputation below 25.1 because I wish to see how many active accounts are not voting. There are some accounts below this barrier that do vote on witnesses.

The truth in numbers

I looked through all the accounts on the blockchain and filtered out the accounts that have been inactive (not posted any comments or articles) and has a low reputation below 25.

 Users #% Share
Total Accounts:310 494100%
None Posting Accounts:233 50875.2%
Low Reputation < 25.1:35 88811.5%
Total Active Accounts:41 30513.3%
--% of Active
No votes:34 70184%
Partially voted < 30:5 33112.9%
Using Proxy:4120.9%
Fully voted:6541.5%

Yes, only 1.5% of all users have used all 30 votes, and another 0.9% are using a Proxy (which hopefully uses all 30 votes). But the rest of the people aren't using their full potentials when it comes to voting.

There is still work to do

We gain more users every day, and they should be as involved in choosing good witnesses as they are posting and commenting. We need to shed more light on the subject, and that is why I posted this.

We also need to clean the votes from inactive witnesses

The list of witnesses still has a significant number of witnesses that have users votes but are no longer active. These votes can be of real use further down the list, to encourage new upcoming witnesses instead.

If you haven’t checked your vote for a long time, please do and compare to pages like Steem Reports , which lists the status of all witnesses.

Anyone who hasn't voted or aren't voting on 30 witnesses

I encourage all of you to go to pages like SteemD, SteemDB and Witness Stats and Steem Reports. After reading about witnesses, making sure that they are alive and running, you should vote on them at https://steemit.com/~witnesses.

Use a Proxy

You can also use a Proxy, any other person that you trust, to vote on your behalf.

Voting doesn't cost a thing and can easily be changed at any moment.

By voting on a witness, or a proxy, you support the network and give your saying. It does not cost anything as transactions are free on Steem. It doesn't take any of your assets away and is just a representation of the value of your account in voting power.

Votes delegated to witnesses or proxies can be revoked at any time without any fees or costs.

Vote for me as Witness

Enjoying what I do and contribute to the community, please vote for me as a Witness or a Steemit Proxy Voter.

By voting for me as a witness, you will support an active witness on Steem and BitShares. I believe a witness should keep up-to-date on current happenings and be a conduit between the many users and the system.

Very interesting, and I'm glad you and Luke are sticking your heads over the parapet, we need more vocal witnesses so that's really appreciated.

I'm not sure if I'm using my full 30, I have just voted for you and a few other witnesses with high APR feeds, due to your other post.

I need to sit down and really get into this, I'm going to clean up my inactive-user votes and read the links to your articles.

So far I like what I've heard from you, (I have just discovered you tonight!) and like I say, I'll start paying more attention to my voting.

Thanks, and Steem on! :-)

Nice :)

I'm happy it made you open your eyes and start to read a little more about it, just what it was made for. ^^

Well I hope this initiative works, look forward to more updates :-)

You can't do more than inform and educate about the importance of working together :)

I hope that people use their votes as best they can, and learn about the work that it involves behind the scenes.

That's good, curious though, what did you find most interesting in the post?

Every platform has problems with activity. Especially, if they are not earning good amount of rewards from their posts. Maybe instead of singling out inactive accounts, we should do a better job engaging in the content of other users.

I wasn't singling out inactive accounts due to the fact that they haven't posted anything, but because I wished to narrow the stats to only include users that are actually posting and engaging in the platform, that really should look on voting.

Of course, engaging users is various other activities are vital as well. The platform of Steem has much to work with to go mainstream. But we are growing and I think and hope what there is always minds open for change. That will listen to criticism and work towards a common goal.

I am sorry then. I must of misunderstand your words. I agree with you. Steemit had a lot of work to do, but I like where it heading. Real users will listen, and the ones who want Steemit to become a next big platform. :)

and i am the only one i think who dont even know what is witess vote :(

A witness works with maintaining the blockchain, the underlying software, that all actions on Steemit.com is recorded to. When you comment or vote you perform actions that gets recorded to this chain of blocks. It is the responsibility of witnesses to make sure these actions are recorded to blocks and inserted into the chain, the blockchain.

A witness invests in hardware capable of this and also makes sure that it runs stable. Unstable servers makes pages like Steemit.com not function as they are supposed to. Many witnesses are also highly active in various tasks around the improvement of Steem and Steemit.com.

thanku so much my friend for explaining i really appreciate it :)

Maybe there should be an incentive to vote. 1.5% is pretty bad. Even elections have a better turn out :-(

Maybe an added interest rate? 😎

Yeah, or maybe some extra STEEM power for each vote.

The reason why I only have voted for about 6 witnesses is because that's all the people I know. I don't know anybody else on the list. Thanks to @fulltimegeek I was able to see this post by you. I have never heard of you before @sc-steemit

Hi @hendrix22. Yeah, it's difficult to know who to vote on if you don't know who they are or what they do. I try to explain what I do as a witness and many, hopefully not all ;), are witness, price and network related.

I try to toss in a few tutorial, guides and other interesting topics in between. But what I do the most is observe and listen to what's going on, like todays issue with Poloniex.

As a witness I act as a conduit between the community and the network, which is why it's important to not just "be a witness" but actually act as a witness.

I will vote for you for witness and follow your account. I need articles like yours to help understand everything that's going on. Thanks for being a conduit so I can use this place :)

what is actually meant by using a proxy? I voted 4 witnesses is that cool? Because I think when one makes a nice app all the time and is very supportive then they deserve it and not by asking for it or promoting voting for them specifically because I want to decide myself based on experience (Y)

When voting on a proxy you delegate all your witness votes to one person (the proxy). You can think on it as a voting follow, but for witnesses. Whoever the proxy votes for, so do you. But this also means that you can no longer vote yourself.

Using a proxy is good if you don't wish to vote yourself.

It's good that your voting yourself, makes you feel more in unit with the system. You have 30 votes, giving less doesn't give the 4 you've vote on more, your just not utilizing all your voting power.

Look on available witnesses and vote for those that you find are good. You can always change later.

Additionally: If your using a Proxy to vote for you should post frequent updates on their voting for followers to read. Me for example, are posting updates for my proxy votes in my Minnow Witness support project.

I'll probably refer this post at some point. Very well put out with very valuable information.

Just happy to help and educate 👍😎
