Front Page: Are you Ready for Seeing Cheetah for the Next 30 Days!

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

While the hardfork introduced faster payouts in a 12 hour cycle it also leads to an anomaly on the front page

The recent hardfork introduced faster payouts in a 12 hour cycle. The intention for this was that posts will be cycling more often. This leads to a higher fluctuation of posts and a more distributed payout. However, it was also introduced that posts can still be upvoted 30 days after their initial payout for a second round.

The New Front Page

An interesting anomaly is now forming on the front page as some posts have received plenty of votes post their initial pay out period. The most popular post is about Cheetah. The trending category is sorted by total value of the article before its payout. Cheetah has accumulated about 7.000$ and thus will likely keep being one of the top posts. Do not get me wrong I love Cheetah, but one month is quite a long time.

Should Authors continue to be on the Front Page after 12 hours?

The Good

On the one hand this allows posts which made little money initially to still have a chance to be rewarded at a later point. Being on the Front Page definitely helps - after all you might not be online within the 12 hour period in which a post is popular.

The Bad

Cheetah is still gaining traction and will likely accumulate a higher sum in a month than other posts can within 12 hours. If we extrapolate this data then the Front Page will soon be cluttered with a lots of older posts. This leaves less room for fresh content.

30 days ago Steem was worth 0.28$. Do you really want to see Posts on the Front Page from back then?

Bug or Feature

In my opinion we are achieving the opposite of what was originally intended with the recent hardfork - less fluctuation and fresh content. Just in case, I have created a bug report for this issue on GitHub to get an official response: :

What Do You Think About this Change - Bug or Feature, Good or Bad?

UPDATE:

The Devs responded! A New Feature will be introduced "Trending 30 days". Read all about it here: https://steemit.com/steem/@riensen/new-steemit-feature-trending-30-days-category-will-be-added

It needs to be tweaked after we see how it works out but it's an improvement and a feature so far imo. A bigger unforeseen consequence of the 12 hours payout schedule that it now REALLY REALLY matters when you post your content, since you won't capture a full 24 slice.

I have a possible solution: Can we just have a bunch of 12 hour payouts?

The reason they changed to a 30 day payout after the initial was to allow posts to gain greater rewards after the first 12 hours. If each post paid out every 12 hours, any chance of trending after that first 12 hours is nearly impossible. At least, that's the ideology behind it I think.

Hm they could also try something like: 12hr, 24 hr, 48hr and so on?

Great content, personally I think the posts should recycle faster than 30 days how about you?

I think it is good that authors get paid post their 12 hour period. However, the trending page should take the time of writing into account and rank old content lower.

Still, people are so annoying not getting what they want. Whether there is an update or not. Nothings Change.

I was thinking the same, i hope this get fixed soon. Im a cheetah supporter, but i dont wanna see the same thing for a month

Hmm, I have been noticing this, and it's a great observation to a possible flaw. I'm sure the devs have noticed and are working on a fix.
