Dumpster Diving
The practice of foraging in garbage that has been put out on the street in dumpsters, garbage cans, etc., for discarded items that may still be valuable, useful, or fixable.

It's a great way to introduce people to the community, showing off my blog, explaining how everything works and answering questions. It's personal and the trust is already there. That's really great! What a find! Grocery stores lock up their dumpsters around here. People try to sue the grocery stores for getting sick eating their garbage! Now all the dumpsters are locked. It's a bummer.
Around here, in Michigan, it's the metal scrappers that win. They drive around the neighborhoods on trash day and pick up anything at the curb that's metal. There is a scrapyard nearby with a giant scale. They weigh your finds and hand you a ticket for the SCRAP ATM and you get paid cash. Ultra Win! Only for copper, you have to wait for a check in the mail - too many thieves stripping copper out of abandoned homes and streetlights in Detroit. It's a big problem. @ironshield

I like that dumpster diving outfit. When I go picking around trash I usually look like trash. And that's before I get down and dirty. Those dumpsters look pretty clean too.
