Five things Steem needs to make it more useful...

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

These past few weeks I have started working on a couple of projects for a major environmental organisation.

It was where I started 30 years ago, and I am totally enjoying it.

But holy macaroni, hasn't the technology changed since 1990!

Environmental campaigning is full-on social media these days.

Outside of Steem I really haven't been much of a social media user - just a bit of Twitter here and there.

But working on these projects has made me realise how useful social media can be for this type of research and campaigning work.

And sadly it has made me realise how lacking Steem is as any sort of social media platform.

There are a whole bunch of facilities I am using...

1. Direct Messaging

I am using this both on Twitter and on Facebook. No going off to Discord. Messaging is there - built into the platform.

2. Groups

Being able to set up Groups - private or public - quickly and easily on Facebook is extremely useful to initiate and run compaigns.

3. Events

Setting up events, inviting people, seeing who is coming and who is interested.... A super useful organisation tool on Facebook again.

4. Action Network, 38 Degrees, Change.org

These are not really social networks - but they are extremely useful tools for campaigning.

Could similar apps or dapps be built on Steem?

These are all useful things. They all add utility to the mass social networks.

That is, in great part at least, why these networks and applications have a lot of item 5 on my list...

5. People

This might seem like an obvious one - but it is a critical point. Twitter and Facebook have lots of people - globally, nationally and locally.

Steem doesn't.

And campaigning needs people...

Steem needs to be useful.

I have been on the platform for over two years, and I struggle to find a use for it.

If Steem had more utility people would use it more.

Steem needs more people. Steem needs more utility.

These are great ideas. Most things on steem are concerned with individual users rather than for group or institutional purposes. I've not been following the discussions about tribes closely, but that may answer some of these issues. I guess other DApps like #palnet could more easily build these features - and make them easier to manage.

It will be interesting to see what features newcomers to Steem like PalNet will add.

Direct Messaging, Groups, all a big YES!

People?
Sure...
I wonder what some of the proposed HF21 items will bring...?
Will it bring more to our little world?
Will it drive content creators away?

Who can tell?

As for Social Media as an IMPACT tool, YES!
Things have changed. I'd love to see Steem the blockchain, catch up.
Someone will add these.
Maybe not the Steemit interface, but someone will.

Interesting to see where the BuildTeam is working on some of these features...

It will be an interesting time ahead with HF21 - no idea how that will play out.

Yes, BuildTeam's @tokenbb forum could be useful.

@partiko has private messaging - @steevc tried it out when we were at a blockchain event (no 3/5) on no.4 I thought this might interest you...

The latest satoshi key involves giving money to charity.

Thanks - will check this out.

Messaging, make it off-chain. Only log-in with Blockchain with timestamp. Just don't spam the blockchain with p2p messages especially private messages. Keep the messages log inside separate place if we want to log it or even a separate blockchain for keeping messaging data.

I wouldn't mind on the mechanics, but keeping messaging in the same place somehow would be useful.

Libra has not seen anything wrong with implementing some key fundamental structures of steem and eos so as to remain competitive in the cryptosphere... I dont see why steem cant model some of facebook's key fundamental structures that keep it unique and relevant in the real world (groups, direct chats etc which u already outlined)

So....this one was brought up by @holms and it seems like an absolute no brainer. No upvote button until you open an article! Check it out below.

Private groups is tricky on a public blockchain. You need to come up with a way to encrypt the information and only allow approved users to have the decryption key(s).

I agree with all of your points though.
