STEEM as a platform for Virtual Reality
Hey guys,
new here and interested in some of the possibilities that STEEM has to offer for many aspects as we move to more virtualized worlds. (I'm a VR game and fullstack web developer)
As an initial post, I thought I'd share some of my brainstorming for a side project that I've been mulling over in my head for a week or so. Was having a conversation with a friend and I think some interesting questions came up.
If you have any comments, suggestions or concerns; leave em' below. I'd love to get some feedback as I start going into development of this.
Also, if you'd like to get involved, send me a shoutout via Twitter @ozzadar :)
what is new?
nothing much, I think I figured out how to integrate a virtual marketplace (integrating cryptocurrency) with semi-anonymous users within a virtual world.
Small side project I've been hammering out in my head.
The idea is that users will be able to register their 'world' within a universe and still allow for peer to peer networking. The idea is to allow for a completely user generated universe with ties to the real world economy.
I want to allow people to do business online, virtually with no transaction fees or oversight. Basically recreating a cash-based economy within a virtual universe. Cash dispensers can't be held accountable for how users spend their cash (drugs, weapons, assassins) and I think that online cash peddlers shouldnt be taking 4-30% of all transactions because they 'verify' transactions.
Can't have a truly free virtual economy without allowing for the illegal stuff too. It's just the way it has to be
true
what about the bit base problem with cryptocurrency?
im also sick of losing 100$ for every 1000$ i make
or is that only bitcoin that has that issue?
that is shitty
i know bitcoin may have issues but Im thinking Im going to integrate a new(ish) cryptocurrency / platform called STEEM.
The idea behind it is that it's an online social platform that rewards its users directly with monetary gains for contributing quality content to it. All the content is committed to the blockchain and verified by 'witnesses' which is kind of like the way bitcoin does it but its more a 'proof of work' type system.

Basically, you'd log into the universe using your STEEM account (it's an open platform where anyone can build applications on top of if) and my universe server will only act as a middleman to hosting a universe. Which I will actually only be hosting a datadump which will take user hashes (generated by steem) and assign the hash to various parts of the universe.
Users will either be able to host their own worlds and register with the universe or they'll be able to register with the universe and can pay me a platform fee for hosting their 'world' for them.
Each world will basically act like a chat server with an environment attached and can be customized to the owners' liking
Only data that would be held on my server would be user hashes and chat logs for each user. Chat logs for each world would be handled by the world server.
This would allow for global, local and private messaging with a friend's list
people's steem blog feed could be displayed within the world as well and people could vote / make money from users visiting their world
They'd also be able to transfer funds directly to other users for private transactions
that all sounds good
how will you overcome the blockchain problem though
won't it just get larger and larger for every transaction until it is too big for anyone to handle?
nah, steem uses a different system for verifying transactions then bitcoin. (I just realized what problem you're referring to)
It's also a problem that isn't within my scope. People much more educated and involved with the problem are working on this issue. Currently the blockchain for Steem is sitting around 1.1GB (which isnt too bad) but they're running using something called the Graphene blockchain which was created specifically to deal with this problem set
yeah i could not recall the right language
so, I'd imagine people dedicated specifically to the problem set will eventually come up with a solution. My application would run on top the chain and not have to deal directly with those problems so for end-users it would be a non-issue
how does it differ?
I have no real interest in cryptocurrency until this problem is dealt with
honestly, no idea. This is an idea I've been cooking up today specifically. Last few days I've been figuring out how to do universe-server to decentralized world server architecture and decided to look into STEEM as I heard it's friendly for developers wanting to build on top of it and it is --- wait for it --- building steam.
lol
but yeah, people are actively looking into solving the problem and as with most things internet/computer related; you must trust those in the field to solve the problem.
Best case: they solve it and STEEM stays relevant.
Worst case: someone else solves it and I migrate to /integrate other platforms
no
the worst case is that it cannot be solved
or crazy shit goes down and the internet goes dark
then we will be fully enslaved
My idea is basically to make your bitcoin/altcoin/dogecoin wallet applicable for online transactions.
If the internet goes dark the world is going to end. (Also, the internet will never die unless the human race as a whole stops being able to generate electricity. Anyone can build their own internet; the reason they don't is because what we have is accepted as a global standard and is integrated globally)
Right now, bitcoin markets have all been shut down because they were centrally hosted somewhere which brings liability to those running the sites.
Modelling bitcoin transactions as a cash transaction system puts liability solely on those involved on the transaction
centralizing is a big problem
In my model, people will be able to spin up their own virtual worlds which they can perform transactions on (they dont even need to register to the universe; they can just host a temporary room and shut it down when they're done)
at least to me, the ideology of bitcoin is what attracts me to it right now
that sounds good
yeah, I want to allow for local or global networking of virtual worlds without fees. Each user would get one free world attached to the universe (but not hosted by me) for free while being able to pay for a) more registered worlds b) hosted worlds
so if a business would want to have an online virtual store they could host it themselves and register it or get it hosted for them and they can go in and edit it
