TAGS, REPUTATION ETC- THINGS THAT DON’T COUNT ANYMORE ON STEEMIT

A social media that gives incentives to its users (content creators), that used to be one of my fantastic openings at any steemit event in the past, this also one of my favorite lines when explaining steemit to people who ask me about this new platform. However, there is a whole lot more at play once you in on the platform.

Of course, there is the investment side of it, you must have staked a huge chunk of fiat or other cryptocurrencies that you own (Bitcoins, Litecoin, Ethereum etc.) in steem. Then you power it all up once you have gotten a chest filled with liquid steem, turning them into Vested shares- steem powers gives you some control, somewhat on the steem eco-system.

After that comes content creating aspect which is where over 80% of users gets there incentives from irrespective of zero investment or some investment into steem. As content creators, there used to be some fundamental things that determine the visibility and the number of rewards you get on your content, the few things that dictate the amount on incentive garnered, a tiny bit of hacks that gets a user more followers and fans. This thing works fine maybe about some ten to fifteen moons back. Read along as I talk about those things that don’t count anymore.

YOUR INTRODUCTORY POST

It is expected of any new member to make a comprehensive publication introducing themselves and what they do best and maybe for a living in the real world and then state what they would like to do on the platform regularly. But, introduceyourself posts rarely get visible in the present state of steem except you are some international celebrity or superstar; people hardly welcome new users now because they are probably too discouraged about lack of incentives. Hence seeing more users coming on board creates more fears and frustrations among people who had invested zero to nothing in the Eco-system.

REPUTATION SCORE

As a steem-noob, your reputation score; that is, the number right beside your username is somewhat around 27. There was a time when the number used to matter a lot, but now even BOTs have REP and it seems not to matter anymore. The only advantage I could think of right now is maybe to get a higher reward in Byteball Airdrop. Aside from getting more Dollars when your Rep score is higher, that same high Rep score could all go in a split of seconds. You will be shocked to wake up and your so much precious Reputation had fallen into deficit maybe as a result of some Intellectual theft, copyright infringement or better still you are caught by some grumpy Whale on a Flagging Spree!

TAGS

Someone asked me recently what tags to use on some particular topics and Games, I sent the user a link to the Tag page and with a message; “Tags seems not to count anymore”. Maybe the user gets the message I do not know, but one of the reasons why I know tags don’t matter anymore is because of the rising abuse and spamming, tag abuse had made most tags less functional for people to find. Some users abuse these tags to attract curators and Whales/Dolphins which had made things go literally worse. Some tags still matter, but the majority are not out of the loop and unless you are not in some group or trail, tags might not fetch you any incentives on your publications.

PROMOTING BLOGS ON STEEMCHAT

When I first joined steemit, I see people constantly posting links of their blogs on dozens of channels on steemchat and I followed their leads. Later, I was ashamed of myself because I finally found out that it was some sort of spamming too to send out links, like dozens of it; even though I do it just once or twice in a day. These have worked for some people; getting an upvote from random benefactors via steemchat is like a lottery, but at some point, it all went south.

Things got out of hand and you could just share your links there for people to read (if people still read blogs) get more viewers if you are doing it to get upvotes, you are on a thin line between time wasting and a waste of efforts!

Nice post. I really hope if we follow each other

Thanks so much friend.

Such a sad state of affairs on steemit currently. I wish things could go back to normal. I vividly remember when introductory posts could make you big bucks and give you the motivation to write your next post.

Just hard nut case my friend.

You are right, it's not the same place it was a year ago. For me I feel the root of the problem is that we let go of governance. Steem is supposed to be a stakeholder governance platform, where the largest stakeholders are price-incentivized and empowered to govern the platform well, because for the largest stakeholders the only way to increase the value of their stake is to increase the value of the network. At some point this idea was given up on, the largest stakeholders became off-hands. There was no more attempt to police the stakeholders just below them, whom have much less incentive to govern well because they can grow at the expense of the larger ones.

Smaller pro-social stakeholders can do little too curb the greed of some others, and all their resources and attention are spent trying. The smaller day to day issues are deprioritised and ignored.

The bad governance itself derives from the belief that since it is your stake, you can do whatever you want with it, no matter how anti social, corrupt or destructive. This is the wrong mindset in my view, but widespread on Steem.

This is just the analytical I am hoping to get, thanks a lot for this @demotruk

I try as much as possible to get these things out of me in a comical way, and thankfully you got what was going through my mind when I was writing this piece.

It's really changed old friend... Almost not worth the effort anymore!

This is the bitter truth...i also follow the trend but none is even working.
Thanks for sharing.

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 12 SBD worth and should receive 135 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
