Steem Bandwidth Allocation Issues

in #steem6 years ago

So there I was doing my usual commenting run and the first time in weeks that I am on top of my comments in my own posts! I was responding to Eon's comment about a short story I made and I already typed in my response when I got the error Bandwidth limitation reached. Madness! I never had a bandwidth limitation error before and at my SP level what about all the others.

I checked Steemd.com and had a good laugh as it showed that I used up 397 KB of the 294 KB allocation given to me. I had to wait for an approximate 59 hours for it to recharge and I can start using Steem again.

Some of the communities like the Empire was talking about the cause of it and we were joking that somebody might be uploading someone's massive HD porn library.

Well, nothing you can do when it happens. I remember last year that when something similar happened but that was the time I started using the Busy condenser but now even using that wasn't working since the issue was bandwidth allocation.

So instead of complaining and blaming Steem Inc. I took a nap. I woke up to a message from the Empire that Steem Cleaners had said the following:

There was a spam attack on the RPC nodes, which in turn infected some witnesses with the broken blocks. Many witnesses were briefly out, randomly affecting only some of us, most are getting back online, but with reduced infrastructure, bandwidth limits are adapting to make the most available possible to everyone, which is sub-optimal

I appreciate that Steem Cleaners looked at the matter and informed the parties being affected and now everything is back to normal

3.5 GB of Bandwidth ready to be used for commenting, posting and maybe resteeming.

I remember working for a dotcom company before that was handling hosting services for a mainly US client base and we experienced a DDOS attack on all of our servers and redundant servers.

All engineers were deployed round the clock to try to divert and reallocate, technicians trying to counter the DDOS and attempting to pinpoint where the attack was coming from.

Lines between the centers opened so that the frontliners could be informed of any developments. Helpdesk operators calling back customers informing them of what was being done and timeframe of fixes and in turn getting threatened, cursed at and being asked where they are located so that they can personally kick their ass.

The frontliners are not paid enough for this abuse but they all just need to grin and bear it as they have to understand that some of the customer's livelihood is at risk. Especially the mom and pop sites that earn daily on their sites and a day that they are down means not being able to afford certain things.

In Steemit we have experienced this and they said the worst was when it took weeks before things normalize but seeing how fast things were resolved albeit with some parts still down from time to time but is manageable.

There was life before Steem and will be after it.

Thanks for sharing and glad that everything seems to be running more smoothly now!

No problem happy to inform people and give a positive about not being negative on the whole thing

I experienced the same thing and admittedly had a heart attack. I thought that maybe a rogue app I authorised had gone on a Steem spree and used up all of my bandwidth. What I experienced was even more frightening:

Recharging. Please wait 1066h 50m 36s.
used 217kb of 29.5kb

1066 hours is approximately 44 days. I was in disblief and then kept refreshing Steemd to see my bandwidth going back up.

Now it's showing for me:

used 221kb of 174mb

Everything is back to normal, but I do sporadically see this issue appearing when I try upvoting or commenting on things: RPCError: transaction expiration exception: but it appears to be happening infrequently and probably a side-effect of the spam attack.

I love Steem Cleaners, they are really doing this platform a solid and counteracting the low-quality and outright spam content in a way that means low reputation Steem users don't have to flag themselves. I've reported so many Steem accounts this week to Steem Cleaners.

OMG if I saw 1066 hours I would have a heartattack as well hahaha 44 days that is unbelievable!!

Yeah the RPC nodes were the ones that were attacked .

Indeed that is why I have the witnesses involved with Steem cleaners as the witnesses I voted on because they play a very vital part of safe guarding Steem.

Hey thanks for the heads up! I was wondering what was going on as I hadn't been on much today and suddenly my bandwidth was -228% haha

Yes, we will all live to tell this tale! It's a matter of perspective I suppose :)

Thanks again!

Knowing you "hadn't been on much today" means only a 100 comments done so far hahahhaha

lol 228% and I thought my 150 was bad hahaha Yes indeed and we will live through it and comment more hahaha

Glad the low bandwidth was sorted out! You must've been commenting and posting like a maniac. ^^

Yes indeed Dawnee goddess hahaha I was able to go back to commenting like a mad man.

Hahahha, I'm taking my time and setting my own pace. :) Glad you're back!

Oooh I've never experienced that! I'm glad they fixed it and now you have so much to go comment and post :) Time to activate the clones and let them do the job :)))

Good thing for you too! The Clone has been busy at work since yesterday and doining commenting however he forgot to write a post bad clone! bad clone!

Hi @maverickinvictus , I also experienced the same. I thought i am going to loose everything hahahaha...!!

Hahahha well its seems steemit saves your post but I really recommend using Busy to avoid that haha

I was trying to sell my sbd when i saw the message, i was like what is this, the last time i checked my bandwith, it was on 99% but what is the problem. I am happy is back to normal @maverickinvictus

Yeah it looks like everything is back to normal. The people with low SP in my communities are able to upvote and post.

They were able to find the source and nip it in the bud.

So glad that I found you through @angelacs :-) Yesterday I was also confused because I could not post my blog on steemit and I was asked to buy more steem - after reading your post now, I believe it was maybe also due to bandwith problems, so thanks for this information:-)

Yeah it was for most people. I experienced it as well and I would never have thought it was possible at my SP level hahahah.

I am glad to have informed you.

Ah so that's what happened. It made no sense to me at first. Thanks for clearing that up for me <3

Yeah Foxy it was a spam attack earlier but hopefully everything is now fine.

Looks like I should have read your post before doing my own. Then, I would have known about the spam attack last night. That would explain why steemworld was having such an issue holding onto nodes. I think it cycled through the seven or eight it lists.

I wonder if they're still suffering the effects of that this morning, since it's been kind of buggy today but not quite as bad as it was yesterday afternoon/evening. You were much more thoughtful about your post than I was. :)

Hehe no worries Glen I almost had a heart attack when I saw I had to wait 54 hours before I could Steemit again haha
It has mostly been cycled out already but who knows when a new attack will go through.
