Rethinking the Steemit monetary system/wallet

Thanks to some interesting thoughts at this article, where @thejohalfiles brought in an interesting and worth discussing idea from @dantheman I started to imagine some alternatives for the steemit wallet.
I found this conversation thanks to my friend @freiegedanken and after a short discussion with him i will try to subsummize some ideas.

Everybody here knows that we have many different options and even different currencies (with different advantages). Steem Power exists to keep money in this system to block dangerous speculations. That's why it makes sense that only Steem can be traded and the powering down lasts some time.
So we at least need to different currencies in the steemit network (one tradeable, one not).

The discussion I mentioned at the beginning is very up-to date because this crazy situation of having a Steem dollar price of about 7$ and a Steem price of about 1.7$. This debate is so current at the moment because nobody knows if the dollar can stand the rush into the cryptocurrencies. Thsi could result in the problem that the term "Steem Dollar (SBD)" could also be counterproductive if many newcomers trust either cryptocurrencies or real metals instead of the weakening dollar.
In this field we have to discuss if the SBD is still necessary because trading is easy with Steem and SBD.

To my mind the SBD is necessary and does a good purpose to include newcomers who have no experience with cryptocurrencies, but do see the opportunity to eran some dollars by investing time or money in steemit.
If we wanted to omit one of the two currencies, I would suggest to choose the Steem and make SBD and Steem Power directly convertable.
A bigger an more interesting question is if the currencies should be backed somehow?

Ideas to improve saving money in Steemit:

One problem is the fall of the dollar. That's why we could assist/support people who are not trusting the dollar anymore with the possibility to keep Steem silver as an own category. This might result in a storage problem for the Steemit admins, but it is a good idea to rethink the saving column. Who really uses the saving category? In my opinion there is no need for that category anymore. A possibility to solve this storage problem with real metals might be an saving option in another broadly accepted cryptocurrency.
So why not making an "Saving as Bitcoin" category to keep the money "save"? That the Bitcoin is save at the moment might be disputable but this part of speculation could be done at the current price on Steemit should be possible. But it shouldn't look like an exchange which is why there should just be one external cryptocurrency.
This additional or replacing saving method could attract some other cryptocurrency fans to the network.

If there is the possibility to store real metals, there could be implemented a new "Saving as silver" category as well, which looks more difficult, complex and extensive. Many people anyway prefer to keep their savings in cryptocurrencies as the following survey shows. Many people do not really want gold to keep their savings:

Please share/resteem this post to spread the idea!!
We need to debate as a community about such things and find for all "investors" (of money or time) in Steemit the best solution!

Although we have some mechanizm to force sbd peg to dollar at the end of day it is just another crypto token which is believed to be pegged with dollar. As a result, the price might fluctuate.

I dont believe that PM pegged coin here on steemit is a good idea. You need to build worldwide safe and delivery system, which is costly. Also steemit is clearly out of manpower even for steemit chain and platform maintainance. And more importantly, steemit placed for broader public not crypto anarchist pals exclusively. For average guy who generally doesnt recognize all end of fiat doom and gloom.

Resteemed !!! good info and ideas,,,, we need to keep our community strong and efficient !

I take the risk to look super newbie but to start, I v never understand the huge necessity to have few different coins (dollars and steem) . I think its stupid. Or maybe I am stupid to not understand the real purpose of it.

Don't you notice that reward is measured by dollars here?
Speaking seriously, the reward is divided by liquid part - sbd - and illiquid - steem power.

True, Steem or SBD could be directly transformable into Steem Power which makes one of the two unnecessary...

Good post, Clear and precise. Congratulations!.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Steem Inc would even make SBD externally exchangeable. As far as I can see it has undermined the position of Steem and thrown a curveball into the mix lately with no functional benefit to the ecosystem besides speculation, which in my opinion is not enough of a good reason.
