A post on possible solution to the plagiarism problems.
Of course I want your opinions criticisms and whatever solutions you have come up with.
Here is the thing. I hate being that guy who comes up with ways to enslave. It really just bothers me to no end that many people do not understand that without the consent of a person that is what rulemaking is. So I have decided to take a whack at solving the problem before someone comes up with a really bad idea that looks good, but is really more shackles and chains.
I didn't think of the problem by the way until I read this post:
The others on the post at the time were @weq @primal-buddhist @belerophon @peppernrino @marina8 and their comments is the spark for this idea.
I am basing my ideas on the idea that everyone is sovereign and as such responsible for the consequences of their own actions. I really like the idea of hoisting thieves on their own petard, but don't like the idea of catching the unknowing in the same net as the intentional thief. Providing a way to make it extremely hard for someone to gain through theft just sounds like an ounce of prevention, which is better than a pound of cure. First however people must be educated.
So my ideas are three and I don't know how viable they are, so I need your help! We are growing and the problem will just get worse unless the net is big enough to be extremely hard to miss!
The first idea is to create a net. A huge net that is informative in nature.
A post needs to be written that teaches what plagiarism is by a better author than me.
In the post needs to be why it is OK for everyone who has written teaching post on plagiarism to post their explanatory link in comments. It also needs to be understood that such is not spam under this specific condition.
That same post has to commit another sin. It needs to be understood that on that post it is OK to ask for upvote, comment and resteem.
I sure don't want to see a bunch of links showing up in comments on my regular post, but in my case I wouldn't mind that as much as the plagiarism. Especially if I knew that there was someone out there who would be a great steemian if they only knew.
- Discord, Booster and Cheetah all could be employed in making this work.
Discord could create a teaching program with the minnows showing everyone how to credit photos and other peoples work. Obviously post are not working all by themselves.
Cheetah, which by the way is my kind of bot, because they show the carrot as much as the stick and really it is nice to see encouragement being used rather than the stick.
Cheetah could be used to provide a link to the plagiarist to not only fix there post, but to Discord to be educated on how not to plagiarize.
Than Discord could hand off the graduates name to Booster who could be used to reward those who have corrected the error of their ways "by" from time to time providing more carrot.
The whole idea requires that the net be huge and cover all three avenues within steemit. That is post, comments, and resteem.
This would allow steamcleaners to focus on the intentional thieves, which by the way is another system that is doing a phenomenal job.
The other two ideas I will present if I get a good response. No use wasting my time if no one responds.
Notice that I am an idea kind of guy, but not so good at execution so if someone can show me a better way to put forth the idea and that better way is better for steemit "have at it".
This is just a bare bones outline. A lot more development and coordination is needed.

There is no algorithm that can like crawl google for exact same sentence structure for example. happens once and its a coincidence, twice its a pattern. Site should issue warnings and result in eventual shutdown of account quite simple.

I am aware of the algorithm problem. However minnowsupport has a lot of people going through it who are needing education. What better way to educate people, but to have them investigate known plagiarist. That is a huge army of people who get the necessary training and education, which is what is needed anyway.

Agreed, however stick should never be used until it is established that 1 the person knows better. 2 they know they are harming Steemit and therefor other Steemians. 3. All attempts to engage and correct the problem has been exhausted. 4 It has been documented that they are ignoring attempts to help them correct the problem.

no problem -- Recommend to look to copyright law generally with regards to the internet -- reason being everything posted anywhere, steemit, youtube, facebook, twitter, its a publication -- so copyright law while not directly the same is going to be very relevant in resolving this issue.
For example i just posted a photograph of the moon -- if someone now were to take it and post it on steemit with no credit, or anywhere else on the web, it would be considered copyright infringement if i could prove i was the author.
Yes and how you would do that is by claiming the photo in the credit source spot on the post. Yeah copyright law is important. Such learning can be used to help educate people, which is more needful than just learning copyright law. The evidence, logic, reason = conclusion is a part of the necessary skills needed to find, inform, and or if necessary kick out plagiarist.
From my perspective it is a win win for everyone! Which is the point of Steemit. lol
for the posters own protection it is important to learn -- and in a system of progressive actions by steemit -- those who unwittingly infringed will learn the first time. Its a tough nut to crack but thats why google and youtube may be a good place to look.
It is true that most people who are honest would learn the first time out of embarrassment if nothing else. However a lot of people were merely indoctrinated and not educated. Many having never even gotten a whiff of what education is let alone enough to know for themselves if they like it or not. Such people would most likely make more mistakes, but will with gentle reminders learn in the end.

This comment is painfully true and even more so for steemit as a whole. I think however that the main solution is education which is its own carrot.
simply claiming copyright would not prevent someone intent on stealing my work in case of the moon photo -- id have to go after them etc -- its why photographers watermark everything.
I know it doesn't prevent people from stealing your work, but you must claim it in the post in order to be able to prove it is yours in the first place. Claim it is yours is part and parcel of crediting your post anyways.
Yes and no -- where is the original - lol it would suppose i never clear the card it was shot on, that the meta data date and time stamp is correct, and never delete the harddrive its stored on before it was posted here HAHAHA!

Youtube uses a 3 strike method or did when i regularly was creating videos. Posters are always given an opportunity to prove otherwise and their content gets 'republished' or not when the matter is resolved -- perhaps Steemit could have something thats beenflagged for plagarism or copyright/plagarism be pulled as well.
Cheetah bot is warning people that their post has been flagged and the username put on a blacklist. Proving otherwise is great the ounce of prevention is way better.
Here proving that you never intended plagiarism could be done by both removing the stolen material or crediting it properly and enrolling in the classes that teach how not to plagiarize.
This of course would also mean learning how to find plagiarism and is a form of community service for the communities effort to educate. lol

LOL im happy to have helped -- i did learn a fair bit about copyright in my education/chosen career. Im no lawyer tho.
just last thing I want to point out -- we dont want Steemit to be held responsible for any kind of copyright infringement either.
If you read it you know they are not.
There needs to be an obvious differentiation made between fairuse plagarism and copyright infringement.

Fair use is not plagiarism.
I am aware of this, just felt relevant to share -- this is where community monitoring for plagarism is not the best idea - i personally think it should be up to steemit entirely.

Another option is a tutotorial, force immediate completion of profile that leads to first post, about me -- here is an excellent point of process to instill steemit value and community values.
It is up to steemit, but apparently we steemians are steemit. Instead of waiting for some central authority to come save us, we can save the day ourselves and in the process educate ourselves not just about copyright law or things, but on what is most important. That is that we are the future and the solutions and the power and do not need to be saved. lol
Its a platform issue tho, indoctrination is best started immediatley lololol -- the way users are signed up -- should forward thread/tag steemit devs.

It's a funny one this, in Australia we have no protection for fair use or satire. Wikipedia recently ran a campaign to try and get the laws changed, pointing out that if Wikipedia was based in Australia it would be breaking the law.
You mean that Wikipedia would be breaking roman statute and municipal code. There is only one law. Harm no one.
In the western world it is funny that we have no real protection from people wearing funny costumes who are really just making us pay them. Some day people will wake up to the fiction that is mind control or Government. lol
