Steemit (Steem) Listed in Top 5 Social Media Replacements for 2019
With the deep cuts from FAANG and the distrust and dislike many have accumulated over the events of the past year and more, alternatives are being sought after. Facebook has had a lot of negative rap last year, and there was even a movement for people to delete Facebook accounts.
The Mind Unleashed has compiled a list of alternatives to the biggest social media platform, encouraging people to leave Facebook if they want to "prioritize privacy, transparency, and free speech". The key is decentralized technologies where you have more control over your content and less chance of being silenced. The blockchain is the focus, with Steem coming in at the #2 spot.

Top 5 Social Media ALternatives
#1 - Minds
Minds is the oldest network on this list and has slowly cultivated an impassioned legion of users who consider it the heir apparent to Facebook. But Minds is vastly different than Facebook: it is open source, meaning that anyone can help improve the site’s design; it is decentralized and encrypted, which means that corporate data miners can’t poach user data and governments can’t monitor the site’s messaging app; and the site allows its users to earn money through their posts.
#2 Steemit (Steem)
Steemit is up there with Minds when it comes to popularity and, like Minds, it has a devoted core of users. Steemit’s design and architecture can best be compared to Reddit; however, unlike Reddit, Steemit users earn money when their posts are upvoted. And unlike Minds, Steemit uses a blockchain technology, which supports the site’s cryptocurrency, Steem. There are many ways to earn Steem—posting, voting, curating, purchasing, interest, etc.—and though there’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to the language of the mechanics, the result is a thriving community in which some users make a living through their site activities.
#3 LBRY
LBRY is a mix between a social network and digital marketplace for content creators. According to its creators, it is the first digital marketplace to be wholly community-run and controlled by its participants instead of a corporation or third party. Unlike Apple, Amazon, or YouTube, for example, LBRY is a peer-to-peer, decentralized, and distributed network; it is both protocol and service.
#4 Nexus Social
Nexus is another decentralized social media application fueled by blockchain and a passionate advocacy for anonymity. Nexus is a bit different than the others on this list because it is largely an ecommerce and ad platform community. Imagine a mix between eBay, Amazon, and Google AdSense except without a centralized server (plans call for a combo of Storj and BigchainDB blockchains instead). The Nexus platform, powered by the native cryptocurrency Social (SCL), facilitates a marketplace where users can “make deals or exchange value through cryptographically-signed and executed contracts.”
#5 Obsidian
Obsidian is a good option for people who don’t necessarily post on Facebook a lot but use its Messenger app. Obsidian’s Secure Messaging app is based on the Stratis blockchain, a proof-of-stake system that protects user data from “cookies” and outside surveillance. Obsidian is probably the youngest entry on the list and is still in its public alpha phase. As an open source application, Obsidian keeps a publicly available repository of its code on GitHub.

Call me biased but steem seems to be streaks ahead of the rest in terms of the diversity on offer!

You don't say. STEEM is cheap now because the marketing is so incredibly weak!
You should put steem before steemit.... Just saying too much credit goes to steemit.

The name used in the top 5 was Steemit, which is why I put (Steem) to make it more clear that it's actually about the whole blockchain, not one site.
Ya I noticed they only refer to steem as a crypto coin. Poorly written article. Not yours tho.

It is always fun to see Steem talked about in a positive way!
Hopefully, first mover advantage will help as adoption increases!

Steemit is no.1 with no competition :)
Btw .... looks like there is a glich in the reputations ....
Gonna check if there is a #facebookescapee #twittersurvivor
Number two is pretty nice.
I am glad that the ditch Facebook sentiment is growing stronger. The mainstream social media sites are hot garbage and they always will be.
Steemit (and the related sites on the blockchain), for all its flaws, has some promise and that is a good reason to stick around and post for now. Can you imagine how far ahead of the game we would be if this place got to be Facebook levels of popular?
