Dlive is leaving steem

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

So I just learned that Dlive is leaving away from steem to a different blockchain.

This certainly will be steems loss, as dlive was one of the best app on steem.

I think for steem to continue to be valuable to core economic issues need to be addressed.

What are your thoughts? What do you think steem has to change to be successful?

Sort:

My take is that Dlive was benefitting a lot from huge delegation and rewards and the move to the new blockchain looks a bit shady and planned if I read some comments on the post you linked especially if the DLive CEO is also part of this new blockchain company.

Steem will have other streaming options and I think some are discussed already. Farewell Dlive then.

Completely agree. This could be a big setback for Steem. It would be like losing that set of community members and revenue, which was coming from this channel.

It's a setback, and it sucks that a lot of people got swindled into thinking that dLive was something that it wasn't. At the end of the day, it wasn't really decentralized, so it wasn't living up to that part of the name. There will be other options that come on board soon. With HF20 landing shortly, a lot of the issues that dLive mentioned in their exit speech will be fixed.

Steemit isn't perfect, but there's still a lot of value in it. I didn't use dLive so I'm not as discouraged as some, but if you can, don't let it bring you down. There are still good people here who want to help Steem succeed.

I don't know that many users will abandon Steem for Lino. It's still untested while Steem is proven and continues to improve. Hopefully the new changes will make things even better (HF20, communities, SMTs).

I hope that helps! :)

dLive was ok at best. The few times I wanted to watch something it was glitchy and multiple people that I follow who used it on a regular basis said the only reason was they are the only option, but they wanted a better option. If I saw a dLive video I instantly moved on once I wasted time trying to watch past videos...and my internet is top notch so the issue is never on my end.

It's seriously is one of those apps that I can't believe nobody had made a better version of and crushed them. Not a loss in the least IMO, someone will fill the void and do even better.

That said I hope the new blockchain they are moving to enjoys their subpar streaming service.

Lmao i kinda found your last sentence funny. Thanks for laugh :)

Glad I could put a smile on your face.

One of the big reasons that I joined steemit last year was because of the potential for future growth with diffferent media. Dlive was a huge boost to the value of content on this platfom. I really hope steemit can get some other video option to incorporate soon.

Dtube has streaming options that you can use. I haven't used it yet, but if that's one of the things you're looking for, I recommend checking it out.

I never used dLive much. You had to go to their site and the videos never loaded correctly. dTube works better than dLive, but Youtube still streams the best.

From what I've read, it looks like dLive had been planning to leave Steem all along. You can read @tcpolymath's take on it here.

And the comments on dlive's announcement aren't positive.

I do think that Steemit has some changes they could make to encourage more apps to come to Steem. It would be nice to get more of those game-changing apps on board.

It's definitely a significant loss.

I noticed that Steem is already down by a couple of cents and the major exchanges have disabled it.

While a setback this is not catastrophic. DLive received a very large delegation and being on Steem helped it grow its user base. I have to wonder why they chose to leave now with all the development coming up on Steem in the next six months. Will DLive come around to a different point of view when the SMT protocol is released and when they have an opportunity to create an SMT of their own and tailor its distribution to their own liking, remedying the the problems with STEEM distribution they cited in their announcement? It will be harder to get a delegation from Steemit Inc then. And what's wrong with the idea of being a multi-chain app? Why not give DLive users an opportunity to earn whatever tokens the new blockchain distributes AND STEEM, SBD, SP and an SMT of their own? The video files and streams will not be stored on the Steem blockchain anyway, only hashes of them. The announcement did not go into any detail as to why DLive had to abandon the Steem blockchain in the first place and in such haste. There must be more to the story than we have been told. This reeks of a conflict between personalities.

dLive was a great idea and executed pretty well however I cannot see how it would have done as well if not for leveraging the steem blockchain and more importantly the steemit community adopting it along with the delegation they received.

As a stand alone platfrom I don't really see how it compete with A. Whatever dApp takes over from dLive, ive already seen vimm.tv posts starting to surface and B. the traditional live stream sites like Twitch and even YouTube

Being a stand alone site means you need to gather your own uses and the cost of acquisition is going to be high since you cant have viewers without creators and you cant have creators without users you sit in a catch 22 many sites are never able to solve even when throwing huge amounts of money at the problem

I think this move was more of a personal cash grab than an actual move to improve the platform, I won't be surprised if they go bust in a few months with the owners pockets already heavily lined

@meno wrote the best article on what happened: https://steemit.com/dlive/@meno/an-objective-look-at-dlive-s-exit

@dlive was doing really great. It was better than DTube. Then they left for a system that is going to reward users based on engagement which is a formula to breed vanity like YouTube. There are bigger problems than circle jerks. Deterioration of incentives for quality is one. @dlive had a massive upvote to vote on those who made great content. Creators had to focus on either quality or investment into STEEM. On LINO, it'd be just bunch of Vlogs, Jake Pauls and PewdiePies

i m 100% agree with you. This should be noticed by steemit team.
