How many posts does it take to become a Minnow? A Dolphin? A Whale?
I like playing with numbers.
I find it fascinating to calculate numbers to figure averages and trends. A few questions that has crossed my mind are "How many posts do I have to make to become a bigger fish?" or "How much STEEM POWER do I need to become a minnow? Or a Dolphin? Or a Whale?"
Let's make this simple. Or not.
The mechanics of the STEEM blockchain may seem a little daunting at times. There's STEEM, STEEM-back dollars, and STEEM-POWER. Sorting them all out takes some effort. There are many good articles that explain this, like my post from last month here.
What I'm interested in doing here is figuring out the math to figure out how many posts it would take to grow in status from a #redfish to a #minnow. Or beyond.
A Steemit.com Secret
I learned a little secret about the STEEM blockchain. It is this:
STEEM POWER does not exist as a token.
STEEM POWER is a representation of the value of your VEST using STEEM tokens. It's a way of calculating the value of your investment. Using your STEEM to invest into the platform, rewards you with greater influence, more valuable upvote and upgraded status. Your VESTS determine which 'aquatic animal' you are.
You can POWER DOWN and convert your VESTS back into STEEM tokens over a period of time.
Redfish want to become Minnows
If I'm a redfish that wants to become a minnow, how would I calculate how much STEEM POWER I need to move to the next level. These SP numbers are approximate, but they give an idea of scale.
The idea of aquatic animals comes from steemitboard.com which ranks your accomplishments and VESTS.
Currently 1M VEST is valued at 487.531 STEEM (This number can change)
LEVEL 1: REDFISH
0 - 1M VEST (Currently everyone under 487 SP)
LEVEL 2: MINNOW
1M - 10M VEST (Currently up to 4,875 SP)
LEVEL 3: Dolphin
10M - 100M VEST (Currently up to 48,753 SP)
Level 4: Orca
100M - 1B VEST (Currently up to 487,531 SP)
Level 5: Whale
1B VEST + (Currently anyone over 487,531 SP)
Your influence? Your VESTS.
So how many VESTS do you have? Find out at steemitboard.com. Just type in your user name and your vests will appear under your 'aquatic animal' icon. If you are reading this, you are a redfish or minnow.
If you are not, please consider supporting this post with an upvote.
The Math
You can calculate your average VESTS per posts by using numbers provided at steemitboard.com. Your total VESTS will include curation and comments (and power ups) so it's sort of your cumulative steemit effort divided by your number of posts.
If you are a redfish with about 200,000 VESTS (about 100SP) and have posted 85 posts, the math is this:
200,000 VESTS / 85 posts = 2352.94 VESTS/post average
The goal is minnow status, so 1,000,000 VESTS - 200,000 VESTS = 800,000 VESTS GOAL
800,000 VESTS / 2352.94 VESTS/post = 340 posts to 1M VESTS
340 posts to minnow. That's a lot of posts.
Trade SBD for VESTS
Because SBD is so valuable right now, you can purchase VESTS at a rate of 13,300 VESTS / SBD by purchasing STEEM and powering up. So about $60 SBD would purchase all the VESTS this redfish would need for minnow status (an additional 380 SP).
That means in the case above, every $0.176 SBD that redfish trades for STEEM and powers up is the VEST equivalent of an entire post's average payout.
Try these calculations with your own account and see how many posts you need to bring your steemit experience to the next level.
These are my thoughts about the 'behind the scenes' of steemit.com and what it takes to become something other than a redfish.
Take care and Steem on!
I read something similar to this from @apanamamama the other day -- and I've been depressed ever since. For five months I've worked on Steemit from the time I drag myself upright until I fall back down at the end of the workday ... and I'm not even a damn minnow yet. (Maybe I should give up some of my other "jobs" and post more.)
I'm going to stop reading you guys. Sometimes there's such a thing as way too much information. Meanwhile ...
This excellent post was included in our new curation effort The Magnificent Seven -- a collaborative work by @enchantedspirit and @catweasel. You have received a 100% upvote from each of us to show our appreciation for your post. To see your creation showcased here ... and the fine company you keep ... please visit this link.
We appreciate your support both for our work on this project and for the other creators of exceptional content who make it all possible. (Follow @catweasel to catch our future Magnificent Seven posts. He's really not as annoying as you might think. <--- He always makes me say that.)
Lol - you're too funny. No, don't stop reading us! :) You can do it! I'm still 400K vests away from minnowhood.
A little here, a little there adds up quickly! @ironshield
Thank you for featuring this post on the Magnificent Seven, it's appreciated.
I didn't intend to depress anyone, but to encourage them to exchange their SBD for STEEM, which will reduce the number of posts you need to accomplish 'minnow' status.
Be of good cheer, Steemit is here to stay and we are the 'early adopters'. 1000's upon 1000's of new users are going to sign up and higher level redfish are going to be the experienced users for all the new Steemians. It's like the Sophomores showing the ropes to the Freshmen. @ironshield
I don't know if my head is swimming or if I am going under.
My wife says she sympathizes. I'm into the technical stuff, she's more practical. In the meantime, keep making videos. @ironshield
Thanks for the info bro... I want to become a bigwhale
Don't we all! Whale status is very very far away. Minnow is a good place to begin. @ironshield
wow so
many
numbers!
haha
It's a numbers game... if you make it numbers game. @ironshield
does putting your steemit name at the end of every post and reply help in some way?
I began doing that as I commented on people's posts as a quiet invitation to visit my blog. I got in the habit of 'signing' all of my comments with my username since then. @ironshield
I see others doing it too and was just wondering!
This was extremely helpful to me (and I am sure many other red fish). So many things with Steemit seems so clouded. It can be difficult to understand unless you have more experienced people to help. So thank you!
It's my pleasure. I'm still learning everyday. I like to share what I've learned. I'm glad you found it helpful. @ironshield
So many more posts, comments upvotes and resteems to do! Lol.....
It's fun!!! @ironshield
I really appreciate posts like this. I never fully understand everything in them, but the more of them I read, the more I see the terms and jargon used in context, the more I understand. So, thanks!
I’m only a gajillion posts away from minnow! celebration dance
Hey what's a gajillion anyway? You are cruzing to minnow status, you're about 10% there already! @ironshield
Thanks for the stats...I enjoy them too! And from what I can tell, I might as well just keep enjoying Steemit for the community aspect of it! : - )
That's the best attitude. The technical stuff is interesting, but it's always best to keep things 'organic'. Community is really what makes this work, more than the technical aspects. @ironshield
That is a lot of posts to make it to minnowhood. :) Thanks for this post. I think it's brilliant.
What's nice now is that you can get more VESTS by purchasing STEEM and powering up than just by posting more. I'm seeing a lot of people cashing out their SBD right now while it's high. That might be good short term, but I think they are missing the bigger picture. @ironshield
I have cashed some out and I've also turned it back into steem. :) I noticed on the esteem app that it shows all of the "payments" as how many vests you receive.
I am so confused about so many of the dynamics here, but I do love it regardless! I just keep plugging away, writing, voting and commenting... and hope I keep finding posts like this that explain things in a way that I actually kind of understand!
That's how I'm learning too. I used to see a lot of posts like these to help users, but lately they've sort of dried up. I'm trying to bring them back. Just answer the question: "What did you learn about steemit lately?" @ironshield
I feel like I don't really quite know anything completely... yet. I have a vague understanding and that's about it. I just keep plugging away each day and hope that I pick more things up as I go!
The best advice I would give right now is to learn how to use 'market' to exchange your SBD for STEEM. The prices are really good right now. I may do a post on how to use market to get lots of STEEM. :-) @ironshield
I have to admit that I had to have my crypto-experienced husband look into this for me, but we figured it out. Thank you! I managed to get myself some more STEEM power going! :)
