Expecting Free Accounts on the Chain
Many people see website Dapps like D.Tube, Steepshot, and Dlive and think it's just like a normal website. These in fact, are revolutionary blockchain technology incubators. This can cause problems , as many people who are uneducated about blockchain technology sign up and then getting frustrated about key features of the Steem blockchain.
It's important to educate these people that absolutely nothing in life comes for free. If you signed up for Steem, under steemit.com's faucet, this means you exchanged your phone number and email address for the Steem account creation fee and a temporary 15 SP delegation. The database of information has not been monetized so far as I can tell, but it could be in the future.
How are accounts created? Steem is similar to bitcoin although it varies in one critical way. Bitcoin doesn't have the same interaction of stake upon the network's operation or bandwidth users can input. With your stake you earn or invest to have power inside the network and permission to use the unfiltered Steem blockchain. In the past single accounts have completed stopped transactions on the chain, such as the "bigga dicka" attack, so having limits on accounts is important for security within the network.
Steem isn't free, and never will be. Thousands of people invest into this network their, time, energy, and cold hard cash. So the creation of accounts cannot and will not be free for everyone. People have to get rid of this mentality. Because no crypto currency network that will last will can sustain giving out it's currency with no exchange of value between user and the chain or other users.
People value things they enjoy. This is why many people invest into Steem. Having this "everything online should be free" mentality just is not compatible for users coming into platform. Each account's stake is a portion of the valuable crypto currency, even if it's .1 Steem. This is a lot of money for some people to spend on a person. Plus giving them a 15 Steem delegation.
When a majority of time the users don't even listen to advice, and fail to back up their keys. Usually coming right back to you with, Where is my next "FREE" account?!? For this reason I feel it's better they must buy their own account and invest their own money
I guess people have to learn this lesson for them self. You should practice care with key handling and use multiple locations and devices that are "cold" or not connected into the internet in any fashion, especially for storing your P5 Private key. If you still don't know what a P5 Key is, stop, then go learn about your keys and back them up now.
I agree in a way this account isn't free, we do invest so much in it wether it's time, energy, or just the action of writing articles, nothing comes for free, we are a part of a bigger community growing and helping each other grow with these daily sacrifices. Thank you for this post, I enjoyed it.
heinlein has true knowledge in his writing, nuggets that came from understanding the intrinsic working of a thing and relaying it in a way that other people could appreciate.
you have that gift too, and it goes largely unrewarded. instead i see other people who copy memes and platitudes, who present simple arguments as new, getting huge payouts because of who they are not what they write.
to me this is where steem is broken, when we value people based on what they project rather than what they give. they send love to the rose but not the thistle, when both are as equally valuable.
I think the same as you, that the own investment at the time of creating the account will help improve the platform, since people will improve the quality of their content to increase their income and recover their investment and make better use of it. You are the maximum friend @gray00. Congratulations!
I've been saying this for a while; although I see the initial importance of having something like a facet system to initially gain a base, it seems to have outlived its usefulness. The upcoming fork will change this in some ways, hopefully for the better, but anytime you cheapen something by giving it away for free, you're bound to see people not treating it with the respect they'd have if they had skin in the game.
On the go steem is quite difficult to secure your keys, I have had to inform people not to walk around with their mobile using the master as there are so many ways to duplicate your device stealing information without you ever knowing till it’s too late.
