Real life rewards and down-voting deliberations

in #steem5 years ago

I've had a busy first quarter of the fiscal year, the financial year, so far with just the rest of September to go. [Our fiscal year runs July to June here in Australia]. The first two months have been hectic completely under control and very productive.

I've written a little over 35% of my annual budget in July and August alone. I should be sitting on around 17% of the annual figure at this stage so am very pleased considering I'm almost 100% ahead of my target figures. This can change in a month if I happen to have a slow one, however for now it's not time to contemplate that; It's time to celebrate [reward] my achievement.

Celebrating ones' success, in a manner and degree commensurate to the success, is highly important. It rewards the effort and provides a little focus to drive at for the next month and rest of the year. This is the same in business or in personal aspects of life. How do I reward myself for my early success? You're looking at it in this image. That's right, eggs, bacon, rye toast and coffee.

A little reward or ceremony to mark the successful completion of a task is important to remind oneself how beneficial the effort exerted in deploying the task was, and is, moving forward. I do this in all aspects of my life: Sport shooting, relationship goals with my wife, financial goals, personal development. Everything. Of course, as stated earlier, the reward needs to be balanced and commensurate to the achieved goal. No point rewarding myself with a trip to Paris after only two good months of results at work. A breakfast at a café is about right. Come the end of the year, and the attainment of my annual budget, exceeding it, a larger and more significant celebration will be appropriate. I even have it planned out - That's an important aspect of this ethos. Having something to aim at as a reward.

Speaking of rewards
You can see my laptop in front of me in this image, I had to move it well out of the way whilst I was eating in case I accidentally consumed it with my eggs. [Not really]. The scenery has changed on steem quite significantly I think, the introduction of free downvotes and the 50/50 reward split probably being the main drivers for that change - In my humble, uninitiated and probably clueless opinion anyway.

I had a Discord chat this morning with a fairly knowledgable, and respected, user who offered some direction on downvoting and I was appreciative. It was cool because I really am clueless when compared to most of those here - Lack of time is one of the reasons for that - Along with an IQ of only 13. So, thank you for that my man, much appreciated. [Unlikely that he'll read this post though]. I have purposely not tagged that person as I don't want to be that dude who tags bigger accounts for no apparent reason.

Downvoting doesn't feel right for most, however doing so has had a positive affect on the blockchain and whilst those receiving them might be disgruntled the greater community will benefit - And that's what we all want right? I understand that there's been some retaliatory downvoting which is human nature - We've been throwing sticks and stones at each other for a long time now...Fists, clubs, spears, arrows, swords, axes, bullets, hand grenades, RPG's, LAW's, bombs, missiles...You get the idea.

I've downvoted here and there using my quota and besides one questionable, poorly placed one, which my new friend [above] brought to my attention, I believe they have all been legitimate, valid and for the greater good. I've received some too...I mean even as adorable and engaging as I am I can't always please everyone, and nor do I want to.

The thing here is that the community can't let the heavy-hitters do all the heavy lifting; It's not fair and indeed, in my opinion, is weak. We all have a voice and must use it. We all have 2.5 complimentary downvotes and should be using them. If we did eventually they probably wouldn't be required.

One of the accounts I follow recently copped a few downvotes, those annoying ones that come for no reason out of nowhere. The account indicated to me it would stop posting and just ghost on steem. Naturally I said my piece then left it for that person to do what they wished. Happily their mind was changed and they're still around. Yay! That's what it's going to take. Persistence and lack of ego. Well done man.

So, this is a two-fold post. It talks about real life rewards which are important as stated plus rewards here on steem. Some downvotes cast now, by the collective, will benefit ALL down the track, even those receiving the downvotes now! How? Through a more solid steem and an increasing price! Sure, the pool-abusers can harvest steem in the greedy and egotistical manner they do, sell it for $0.40 on an exchange somewhere. But...Wouldn't it make more sense to support steem with a view to much greater gains for the future? #500dollarsteem

Each of us will do as we please, that's human nature, and it's even more prevalent when one has a computer screen and the interwebs to protect them. However there's implications to each action we take, now or in the future.

Thanks for reading - Time to go and curate some posts for @curangel

I am still on the fence with downvoting as I am mostly mobile and Partiko doesn’t even have the button. When I get home, I am mostly focusing onbmy content and catching up on my feed (and playing Splinterlands) which is tough enough given my limited time. I am sure I will eventually get around to it and other things surrounding the new Hard Fork!

Glad your budget's well and truly on track. Also that breakfast looks incredible.
I've been trying to focus more on downvotes, hitting a little syndicate your brother put me onto. Looks like they've stopped posting now though, so I'll have to call it a success and look further afield.

Ah yes, many of those little groups are beginning to come around to #newsteem I think. There's always more though it seems. Yes, amazing breakfast from 33 Chapel in Norwood. I can be found there most week days.

Flags are murder! Just kidding I'm a big advocate for flagging..

I apologize I just skimmed through your post, congratulations on your successes and rewarding oneself is important.. I saw the bacon and the laptop and was overcome by bacon lust..ill pop in later for a word for word read.

Bacon-lust is the real deal...But some afflictions can be positive I think!

Thanks for commenting - Yes, I think the flagging thing is having a positive effect on the environment. Take a full-read later or not, either way I think you captured the main thrust of the post. I mean downvoting not bacon. :)

When you're grizzled old farts like us it's easy to go pfft whatever XD For newer people it can be somewhat astonishing to suddenly cop random downvotes for no apparent reason so I totally understand the sentiment of wanting to bail (who wants to stay where they're apparently not welcome after all). Have had to tell a few people to just ignore random downvotes too :)

Yay for early success! Enjoy the reward ;D

I hate fiscal years they always confuse me!

Yes, I agree and considering the account I refer to us quite small, a working-dude who has little time to blog it is even less attractive to stick around if he is to get DV's. I believe this is where we come in...Offer support and encouragement and help them stick.

Yay for being in front of my budget...Boo because the first part of September has sucked! 🤪🤣

Interesting note on the down-voting. I think I've only used 2-3 times in my two years here. I wonder if you or anyone reading knows this answer. It used to be that down-votes only counted if the person down-voting had a higher reputation than the one being voted against. If the down-vote came from someone of lower reputation, it had no effect. This basically kept newbies or spammers from creating multiple new accounts and down-voting an experienced user to death. Do you or anyone know if that is still the case with the hardfork 21/22 changes?

The way I understand it the DV will have an effect either way - I could be wrong though. All of the accounts I’ve DV’d are way larger than me and my DV has affected the reward. You get 2.5 free ones a day that will not affect your upvote. Maybe @tarazkp can clarify for us here.

The effect on reputation depends on your own reputation. Reputation doesn't matter though - it's just a number.
Rewards are and always have been influenced by all votes.

Thanks for the answers and clarification!

Thanks mate, I knew someone would come to the rescue. 😉

I would never downvote one of your postings. Even the ones where You get all Gushy and Girly like on us....lmao

Cuz even Your Less Manly Posts are still well thought out and composed.

P.S.... Well Done Man....!!

I'll have to blog about my guns on the weekend...Something suitably manly...But we're off to a lavender farm Sunday so maybe that instead! 😂
