STEEM marketing: who to target??

in #steem5 years ago

There has been a big flurry of activity recently one the Steem blockchain and a lot of it has been sparked over some split opinions from the community concerning Steemit Inc.

Even though I do try to stay appraised of what is happening I did not get involved in this case. The outcome (for the moment) was exiting enough though. There was a change in the management of Steemit Inc which you can read all about here:
https://busy.org/@steemitblog/steemit-inc-leadership-changes
https://busy.org/@steemitblog/steemit-s-new-direction
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@elipowell/meet-steemit-inc-s-new-managing-director

This in my opinion is a step in the good direction as also at Steemit Inc there is a realisation that things have to change so that the blockchain as such can evolve. With @Elipowell more in charge of the day to day management and @ned more focused on the vision we should also get a bigger push in marketing efforts from their end (some examples below)
This also coincides with a lot of Steemians taking it upon themselves to start marketing actions.

So this all is amazing but taking something from marketing 101 is that we need to know who we are targeting.
There is a common practice in marketing to create so called personas that represent the target audience as best as possible. We then start to build a whole fictitious person and give them "fake lives"

So I would like to propose/present 3 basic crypto users that are maybe also on Steem. I will gladly admit that these are limited to my European experience and that there are some options to create more personas like the typical users in African regions or in countries like Venezuela which are taking to crypto like fish in water.
These are some that I have used for some work I have been doing myself. The comments on the pictures are in German but I will translate below every picture.

Persona Crypto Neuling.jpg

Lets start with Emma, the crypto newbie

she is 24 and has recently graduated and is working her first job. She has a college education works in a marketing company and is part of the biggest future audience. After the explosion of the bitcoin price she was part of the group of young and technologically able people that checked out this new technology. The fact that she was late for the big boom of end 2017 is not so bad but she also discovered Steem and has been blogging about life for a while and has been throwing in a few bucks now and again into Steem and other different cryptos. This makes her a Minnow with a little over 500 SP vested in her account.
she is:

  • creative
  • ambitious
  • driven
  • sociable
  • money conscious
  • likes tech and trends

The next one is Luca, the crypto enthusiast

He is part of the bigger group here. He got into crypto 2016 -2017 and sees the potential of blockchain and is a true advocate of the technology. He is also very mistrustful of government and banks in general and believes cryptocurrencies are the solution. He as such "in it for the Tech" but does not look past the values of all the coins he holds. There are some ICO's that he bought into and he is still holding those bags because the bear market caught him by surprise. He has taken the drop to buy a bit more maybe even more than he should but this has taken him up to dolphin status with 5k -10k in Steem. Part has been blogged together and the other part bought as an investment. He is also very aware of what is going on in the space and is following all the dapps with interest and spreading delegations around to get SMT coins and some passive ROI. Luca will be part of the Steem middle class.
he is:

  • Knowledgable
  • Idealistic
  • A bit obsessed
  • Cynical

Our last guy is Hans (45) the curious investor

He is one of the less traditional investors who is looking for some high risk interesting projects. Lots of money men in family offices and VC capital are carefully looking at crypto. You do not see him on twitter shouting "moon and Lambo" but he is dipping in more than a toe and investing small amounts of his portfolio. The fact is that the "small amounts" that Hans has at his disposal is more than most can afford, it was probably several thousand as a calculated, high-risk, investment. This makes Hans a Steem Orca. He keeps his account anonymous and does not even post much. This is more of an investment in the long term. That is also why there are no delegations in the Dapps since the main investment is just in Steem as a platform. He is an Orca with 50-80k of SP
he is:

  • serious
  • careful
  • strategic
  • informed economically (prepared for the upcoming recession)

He is in my opinion what we do not have enough here on Steem. We need more people like Hans and they also need to be better advised on the potential of all the adaption and development that is going on. Delegations to several different accounts would make this a better investment for them and give a ROI for them while supporting upcoming projects.

I do also know I have left out the main 2 fish in the Steem Ocean: The redfish/minnow.
These are harder for me to define.

  • people that start out and do not have much success
  • people that just want to game the system
  • people for whom 1 dollar of Steem per day makes a world of difference and who take it out to improve their lives (and as such do not build up stake)

So if you do want to do some marketing, then keep in mind who you are targeting and how you phrase everything because your message will be taken in a different context by Emma, Luca and Hans

so who are you? can you Identify with any of these 3 personas?

I am personally a slightly older Luca

who would you add?
