As a writer, you will not find a much better platform than Steemit. It gives you a pre-fab blog site, a potential audience in the hundreds of thousands, and rewards in the form of Steem crypto.

For entries into those photo contests, short posts are OK. But it's a good idea to add a bit of text explaining the photo, to give the post some meat and to make it more interesting.
