A possible reason is that SBD has been pumped, and this in turn is pushing up the price of Steem.
If the SBD value is much higher than $1 then you can make a great yield by buying and powering up into SP and posting - 10% or 20% per month depending on the Steem / SBD ratio.
If this is the reason then there will be a natural equilibrium reached as Steem rises towards the SBD value, or as SBD falls.
Two:
People have started to talk about Steem because it's now established and actually thriving as a new economy, rather than fading away. With SMTs on the way that's a huge addition. There are also DTube, Utopian project, Zappl, Steepshot and all the developments that are actually much further advanced than competitors.

It's going up because it went up yesterday. That'll happen until it stops going up. Because crypto.
@btc-dialog, there is a strong, active Korean community on Steemit. Over the last few weeks and months, I heard of a couple of Korean exchanges listing STEEM for the first time.
My thought is that an existing interest in STEEM coupled with the ability to now purchase STEEM nationally
created the SDB price increase
which lead to converting SBD to STEEM to be powered up
which lead to an increase in the current STEEM price.
Just a thought, but I believe it is plausible. And when you add fast transactions no fees, you have a killer combination.
Son was telling dad about his recent successes in Bitcoin and other Altcoins and told him about the cool platform he joined. Dad always hated Facebook and wanted to support it's greatest competitor so he mingled with his banker buddies and they decided to give Steem the final push it needed to get finally worldwide recognized. After the 4 dollar jump everybody understood what cool stuff is going on here and couldn't help but join this awesome network.
More users are preaching the Steem bible now and the whole thing took up loads of momentum and become unstoppable.

If you look at Steem Chart peaking in 2016 BTC value and NOW arriving at the SAME peak in USD value for 2018.
I believe it has something to do with the anticipation of the release of SMTs.
