RE: Steem Blockchain Size

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

The Steem blockchain was just over 1GB as of May last year. Meaning that the Steem blockchain has increased by 40 folds.

That is an exponential growth of data.

Calculating the growth using an exponential formula gives us:

x0 = 1 gb
r = 4000% = 40 fold per year
t = 2 years
x(t) = x0 × (1 + r) t = 1×(1+40)^2 = 1,681gb

and in 3 years it would be 68,921gb

and in 8 years that would be 7,984,925,229,100gb, or the total size of the internet.

just an interesting thought.

Sort:

sorry, but two measurement points do not necessarily indicate exponential growth, and exponential growth cannot be extrapolated with only two data points. So interesting though, indeed, but the calculations are not leading to meaningful numbers...
And as described above, the 40GB is more than only the blockchain.

ah I see, I guess I misread that.

But the number of users increase, won't the total amount of the blockchain data increase exponentially?

with each added person, the amount of potential interaction is increased by an order of magnitude.

blockchain size increases by blocks and blocks contain transfers, posts, votes, ...
So "only" actual, not potential interactions make it to the chain. It's likely that new users contribute to an accelerated growth, but many more factors as well

The steem blockchain, as of now, can it support videos?

I read that the steem blockchain is built on top of IPFS, is that true?

I guess you refer to DTube? AFAIK this uses the steem blockchain as databse, but the actual video data is hosted via IPFS. See https://steemit.com/video/@heimindanger/introducing-dtube-a-decentralized-video-platform-using-steem-and-ipfs

Ahh ok. Sorry for the late reply. But do you know how big the blockchain is now?

I want to see if there is indeed an exponential growth.
