Re: Taskmaster: Steem could use a search engine

Tell me, has this ever happened to you? You were searching on the internet and not getting get paid in crypto to search? That's terrible! Think of the children! This is a crisis some thoughtful programmer needs to fix.

@taskmaster4450 wrote an article I saw this morning saying Steem needs a browser. Here's the article.

A browser?

I've had the idea in the back of my head for a little bit that what Steem needs is a Search Engine powered by Steem. My brain child is likely a little easier of a project than a full browser and it works well with some aspects of blockchain. Take an opensource search engine and slap in some steem-engine tokens as a reward for using it on the Steem platform.

What's good?

Well, the major media companies modify search results all the time. I see the view counter changing on my own videos and others frequently. There's other problems too especially with how they like to silence conservative voices. They change search results. Having all of this on a blockchain means that we don't have to trust CIA backed projects to tell us what other people are searching for.

If all the data of what you're searching for is on a blockchain than you can review that data and see what people are actually searching for. Combine that with a token distribution plan where people who search get tokens for doing it and now you can start to incentivize people to use your search engine.

What's bad?

When I look up furry hentai lesbian alien porn and it gets logged as an aggroed search that probably feels invasive. So, this thing would be great for looking up things on the internet excluding sex, which means it's good for like 3% of internet traffic. Maybe you could get some searches to stay anonymous and the app could search on a users behalf, but then the app awards the token to itself instead of the user.

Free idea for an inspired coder

The project doesn't seem that daunting to me.

Step 1. Open Source Search Engine
Step 2. Keychain integration
Step 2a. Steem Engine Token creation
Step 3. User searches, app or user posts the search as a custom json
Step 4. App sends them tokens for searching

Phase 2. Use the token for marketing/ad purchases on the site to give it value

A good dev could probably whip this up in a week or so as a very early alpha.

Steem definitely needs a search engine

...but not the type you are thinking of, we need to be able to search the steem block-chain.

There was this post i read, not long ago, that i wanted to link... but couldn't find it. It should have come up because i searched a pretty specific word.. but to no avail.

Steemit should be able to go to a users page and give a tag cloud. And then be able to sift by user and tag... but nope, we don't have anything like that.

We should also be able to search via "how old".
And then i would like to see filters for word count, photo count, vote count, comment count.

Anyway, i believe steemit needs a search engine.

But, i also believe that the steem block chain is set up in the worst possible way to search.

this is part of hive mind. It'll get here in the next month or two is my guess.

Yeah we're all just starting our exploration of the capabilities of Hivemind. SteemPeak just got a server running and we'll see what we can do with it to help the EXPLORE section of our interface.

Thanks for the cite...although I think you switched the article linked.

Here is the article you are referring to.

I think your idea great. I always felt invaded by the fact everyone at Google knows when I search for furry hentai lesbian alien porn. This is a way to offset it.

As for the main idea, why not do both. Simply tell Matt that sleep is an overrated experience.

Presearch is working on a project similar to that. Dsearch (?) could be similar. It is great to link the token idea in which aligns with our full incentive mission. Get paid to search is amazing.

I hope some take up your suggestion on this and put together a MVP.

Why not a range of tablets and laptops; all pre-configured and Steem branded, running a custom OS?
When Matt has all that up and running, the witnesses (including Matt) can launch their own ISP's and we're good to go.

Don't forget about the satellites. @yabapmatt should start working on the launch of a number of low orbit Steem satellites that can provide Steem Internet coverage to the world. We then can have Steemians on the ISS posting and curating content.

It sets us up well for when the Moon and Mars are populated.

Just like presearch, the only downfall of presearch was it doesn't award the token. They hold it for a reason perhaps and claim it for the sake of account review.

Presearch did come to mind. How about points like Partiko and require steemians to delegate in order to funds/ rewards this search engine.
A reason to for abuse case for both parties.
Keep on postin

That would be amazing! I love your alien porn example.... lol

Slapping steem engine tokens on everything is bad. Tokens must have a very strong use case to justify creating one.

A search engine on a blockchain is a good idea don't waste it by requiring the integration of tokens. If you send tokens to everyone and all they will do is sell. The token will be worthless and no one will use the search engine even though it is useful.

Value is not derived by the buying and selling...that is how price is established. They go through cycles and might (or might not) reflect value.

Tokens need no use for creating them. The use case is what builds value in that it attracts users. You drop 2 billion tokens on people for a search engine...they will have value if 3 billion people use it. If only 40K, it matters none if you dropped 5 million, they arent going to have much value.

Many view increasing supply as a bad thing. In the world of crypto, it is an incentive for people to use the platform and create more value. This is a new concept to all of us.

But you have a point about the success rate of tokens...there will be a lot of projects that end up as nothing. Just the nature of technology...we are going to see a lot of experiments.

You need faucets and sinks. As long as there's a good sink there's value.

Yeah I agree.

I like it!! I’ve been waiting for a working search engine!! I’ll be very happy to see this happen!!

It'd be a good start just to have a decent search function for content within steem
