I had fun though and I think participating in contests is a great way to get to know people and also a great way to build your steem power too.
I have written lots of posts that should be producing more when the work to create and the unique info shared is factored in, so if you can enter a contest and end up winning more than what the average post produces, I think it's a good strategy...it's a golden egg, coming from another basket.
I have been feeling the same almost word for word as what you just said. I work super hard at some of my stuff. My memes! LOL! IDK - I am not the most gifted and unless you get a ton of support from whales or people say 10 rep. points above you, it is kinda slow trodding and disheartening some days for sure.
I think an area where we both can really excel is in the commenting section of other people's posts. Especially when the idea that you've communicated is beneficial or adds value to the topic being discussed. I've had simple comments pay out a $1. Doesn't sound like much, but I worked over 5+ hours on my recent "gummy post" for a pay-out less than .20 cents.
I agree and @papa's post a week or 10 days ago said it best..... THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON TO WHAT WORKS ON STEEMIT most of the time LOL.
If you look at the steemitwhales site and input my name, I have literally almost broke into the top 200 now in comments, as of an hour ago or so, I think I was at #207. I cannot comment much more than I do already.
I try to add value like you say when I can. Some stuff I am just not able to help on -- so I try to offer encouragement at least. We all can use more of that.
I advised one of Canada's largest real estate groups / landlording groups some solid policy advice today on Fascistbook lol, so if this were Municipal or Political / policy work forums or real estate, I could offer more lol

I had a few simple comment posts pay out too like you say, good point. I won a contest when I was new on comments one nite, I posted on Liberty lol
