Steemit Code of Ethics - How to be a good Steemian!

in #steem-help7 years ago (edited)

As a growing community we need a Steemit code of ethics to guide posts and interaction.

I propose that good community members follow these rules to ensure they interact with the community in a positive way:

The Core Principles:

1.) When posting, aim to contribute value
2.) Upvote material that contributes value
3.) Only flag material that is abusive

Additional things to avoid:

Don't plagiarize

Don't spam

Don't seek attention by posting comments unless you have something relevant to add to a conversation.

Try not to...

Use too many images as signatures. A thoughtful comment is enough.

Follow a million other Steemit users before actually looking at their posts and interacting with them.

Publish a lot of content without engaging with other people's content. A whale could spot yours and easily see that you aren't engaging and helping others as well.

Remember to...

Upvote posts that you like, share the wealth with the minnows and minimize the use of your upvote power as an effort to make profit.

What about flagging?

It's appropriate to flag posts that include:

Plagiarism
Irrelevant spamming
Verbal abuse
Deceptive tagging

It's not appropriate to flag posts for these reasons:

Disagreeing with a post
Jealousy of rewards
Revenge
Anything other than abuse

Final Thoughts

Be a sincere, caring and thoughtful member of the community. Share good ideas and positive feedback with others. Give help to those that are in need of it and support your fellow community members.

These are the values that will bring you success on Steemit. These are the values we need to promote as fellow human beings.

Your thoughts and feedback are always appreciated, please leave your comments below.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on flagging when someone posts material belong to another while giving proper credit (so it's not plagiarism) but nonetheless without that other's permission. For instance, what if somone posts one of my pictures without my permission but gives me proper credit so as not to plagiarize. Isn't that worthy of a flag?

This is a good point and I agree with you Sean but I need to ask you a question to clarify this. Is it your original picture? Did you make this image using photoshop and was the image you used to make it (assuming you needed one) also originally made by you. If the author doesn't give credit then there is no doubt it is plagiarism. If it is your original artwork that they posted and credited but didn't ask for permission I think it's fair to simply ask them to remove it. If someone asks me to remove something and I know it's not mine it will be the first thing I do. Do you think that's fair? We can try to be the bigger person in the situation. If the same person does it more than once after a polite warning, flag them, mute them and find any way necessary to remove them from your circle. Thanks for your thoughts.

amazing.... this post is so awesome.

useful post man! follow me at @purechocola

This is really good, I am going to resteem it. I love the contect.

Amen to this proposal. Steemit would probably become just another social platform if certain ethics won't be observed. I must admit I have done one amongst those you mentioned (i.e. following people without reading their contents first and interacting with them). Pardon me, but I will refrain from doing this from now on :) Thanks for highlighting this.
