Many of you who has been following me would know that I am a lecturer in local University in Malaysia. I teach in the creative design faculty. There is this one project that I work on and I wish to give it an exposure on Steemit. One of the most fundamental problem faced by artists like myself, my cartoonist friends and my students in the future is the introduction of the new medium. The online medium.

I am from the old school. I am used to the printed media. In the old days, I draw for a local cartoon magazine called APO. However, we soon realise that with internet, people are turning to the digital media as their medium. Then the new economy dawned upon us, the new age readers do not pay subscription and hates to be spammed with advertisement. Being so used to the printed media, the first question was how do we make money to pay the artists' salaries.

With my students we have a printed version of our cartoons compiled into a booklet.

Use of Steemit

Finding it hard to keep up with the speed of technology, I moved to the academic field. At least the pay is stable. But for the rest of my friends, it is a struggle. It wasn't until @perennial introduced me to the Steemit platform. Looks like it is possible to monetize without subscribers and paid advertisers. Some of the people I personally know has huge followings in the facebook and Instagram, but it is not bringing them any returns.

I was enthralled by the use of Steemit and one my foremost obligation to my students is to prepare them in their career as budding illustrators, creative content providers and artists. It is almost indispensable that income would be a major concern.

I took up this initiative to study and learn how Steemit work and attempt a project for my students to showcase their work and use the Steemit platform to gain some income while their explore their creativity. Not all students are from well off family. Hence, any form of financial assistance is greeted with much enthusiasm. I was a student once, I still remember how it was spending my scholarship money on buying art equipment and having nothing left by middle of the month for food or rent. I don't wish to see my students face the same fate as me.

The other facet of the exposure that I am looking at is the fact that community do openly engage with the authors which is good. Students are exposed to criticism which would be a benchmark of their work quality.

Streamlining with My Current Project

Rollers is a setup whereby myself (@sireh) and the co-founder Erwin (@elvingreen) have initiated. Comination is a coined term and it is our student's comic club. Our plan is to have the printed version of the student's work published by March or April 2018 and the same will be first posted in Steemit. In that manner, they will be rewarded depending on how much the community appreciates their work.

I am very much looking forward to this because as a lecturer, I can't possibly ignore these talents or leave them to have their fate tested in the society. If they have a better platform, at least real talents will stay and give our community a good stead for the future.
