Learning to Play GO - Help Me!!

in #steem-bounty6 years ago

The go is a strategy board game for two people. It originated in China more than 2500 years ago. It was considered one of the four essential arts of Chinese antiquity.

In the last weeks I have been very interested in learning about the game GO! due to the publications of @markkujantunen who recently went to an anniversary of the GO federation in Helsinki, as well as the publications that show @gamer00 and his intelligent son Leo playing GO.

Rules

The go is played on a square board with black and white stones. The professional games are played on a 19x19 board. The fastest games can be played on smaller boards such as 9x9 or 13x13.

  • The game starts with the empty board. The purpose of the game is to control more points in the board than the opponent at the end of the game.
  • Black plays first. Players take turns placing a stone of their color at a free intersection.
  • Once played, the stones never move, but they can be captured if they are completely surrounded by the opponent's stones.

End of the game

A player can pass at any time. The game ends when the two players pass. Busy intersections and those that are completely surrounded by a player count as their area. The player with the largest area wins.

Capture

The stones that are completely surrounded are captured and removed from the board. For example, White can play in A to capture the black stone.

The stones that are connected vertically or horizontally form a group, fight together and are captured as a unit. For example, Blanco will capture three stones with one move in A.

Ko

Repetition of positions on the board is not allowed. The rule of ko forbids him to play a play that would cause a repetition of positions.

In the example above, it can not be captured immediately. However, you can recapture after you first play at another site. So he can make a threat elsewhere and then recapture the ko after the opponent responds to the threat.

Suicide

The plays that end in being completely surrounded are not allowed. Two examples:

The plays A and B are suicide for Black. The black stones would end up completely surrounded. However, Black can play in C since it also captures two white stones:

Freedoms

A freedom is an empty intersection next to a group of stones. For example, this white group has three freedoms, in A, B and C:

A group is captured when it has no freedoms. A group with only one freedom is said to be in atari.

It can be decisive if it has more freedom than the adversary. For example, the two groups below are in a race to capture: White can play in A and B to capture the three black stones, while Black has to play in C, D and E to capture the three white stones. White will win this fight.

Final score

There are two ways to determine the result at the end of the game:

  • Area calculation Count the busy intersections and also the empty intersections that are completely surrounded by a player.
  • Calculation of territory Count the intersections completely surrounded by a player, plus the stones captured.

The two counting methods give the same result if the two players play the same number of stones.

I am learning a bit of this game and it will always be nice to read your comments, you can share your experience, your best strategy, some tricks or tips. I will use the rewards system @steem-bounty to reward the best comments on this topic.

@jmhb85 has set 0.750 SBD bounty on this post! logo_for-light-bg_1000.png # What is a bounty exactly

A bounty is money sent to a post to be distributed to the users commenting on it. It provides a way to reward users directly and works in addition to the steem/sbd they receive from the blockchain. It works independently of SteemPower.

You create a bounty by sending any amount of sbd/steem to @steem-bounty together with a post-url in the memo.

Users are then competing for the bounty by writing their answers to the post in comments that will achieve upvotes from the community and especially the bounty creator. The money of the bounty gets distributed to all top level comments of the post at the same time when the post is paid out (7 Days after it was written). How much everyone gets depends on the votes the comments received. The sender of the bounties votes are weighted higher so that she decideds where 80% of the bounty money goes and all other votes determine the rest.

@steem-bounty does all of this for you automatically. You can use this service to automatically pay out a challenge, ask a hard question or simply to reward the people that interact with you.

Read more about how it works, even in different languages here.

Congratulations to the following winner(s) of the bounty!

  • @yourinfo has earned 0.742 SBD. 0 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.742 SBD from the community!
