In our last round, the teams had an opportunity to attempt to safely drink some water. The water appears to have two issues with it. For one, it seemed that some sort of toxin or chemical has contaminated the water. Also, there was some sort of bacteria in the water.

Four options were given, and two of the options would have rendered the water safe to drink. Unfortunately (for everyone except @herpetologyguy), the majority of the teams did not choose a safe option.

DAY 5 ROUND 1 RESULTS

Option 1 –Drink the water as is, straight from the source.

This option would have proved itself to be fatal. The bacteria and parasites in the water would have immediately became the bacteria and parasites in the team member’s bodies. Thankfully, no one tried this option. If you believe that water has some sort of protozoa, virus, bacteria, or parasite in it, please do not drink it!

Option 2 – Boil the water like crazy and then it cool and drink it.

This was the most popular option this round. This is where most of the teams perished. This water did have some sort of chemical in it. However, as it was in the state that they found it, it was not in a lethal quantity. Once the water was brought to a boil, the bacteria and viruses were killed. However, by continuing to boil the water for excessive periods of time, the chemical in the water actually becomes more concentrated. This time, the chemical concentration proved to be lethal after the excessive boiling.

Anytime you suspect that water has a toxin or chemical in it, choosing to boil it will cause the water to evaporate and leave behind a higher concentration of the contaminant. This can be dangerous and even lethal.

Option 3 – Bring the water to a boil for just a second and then let it cool to drink.

Once water hits the boiling point, any protozoa, virus, bacteria, or parasite will be killed. If there happens to be any solid particles in the water, you would need to boil it slightly longer to cause the internal temperature of the solid particles to hit the boiling point too, otherwise any bacteria or such inside the particle would still remain alive.

By only boiling the water long enough to kill the bacteria and parasites, not enough water evaporated to cause the chemicals to become concentrated. One team chose this option, and, amazingly won the contest by doing so! Here is the winning team!

Option 4 – Almost bring the water to a boil, and maintain the temperature just below boiling for 30 minutes prior to allowing it to cool for drinking.

This is another safe way to render water drinkable by killing parasites, bacteria, protozoa and viruses. Effectually, you are pasteurizing the water. The water never actually hits a boiling point, but it becomes hot enough for long enough to kill the parasites and such. If a chemical or toxin was not present in a lethal quantity prior to this process, it would not be after it either, as no excessive evaporation would occur. This was the other safe method to pass this round. Unfortunately, none of the teams chose this option.

Honestly, I thought that this season would last for at least another week. Since it did not, I’ll wrap it up and pay out the prizes. @herpetologyguy will receive 325 STEEM for being our winner. The participants who perished in this round will receive a ribbon.
