Statue Friday — Dimitrije Davidović

Dimitrije Davidović (Born Dimitrije Georgijević, Zemun, Habsburg Monarchy, October 12th 1789), Minister of Education of the Principality of Serbia, author, journalist, publisher, historian, diplomat, and founder of modern Serbian journalism and publishing.

As one of the most educated young Serbs at the beginning of the turbulent 19th century, with strong patriotic orientation, he was on the Turkish government list of wanted men. So he had to change his born surname Georgijević, and take his grandfather’s given name “David” as his surname “Davidović” to avoid detection.

He studied medicine in Vienna and has trying to found a Serbian paper, but his projects were eventually suppressed by the Austrian government. Among other works, he wrote “History of Serbia” (Историја Сербије), 1813-1815, considered his best work, and also “Serbian Woman” (Србијанка, 1826), an epic poem in praise of the liberation of Serbia, led by Karađorđe Petrović (1804) and Miloš Obrenović (1813).

His talents gained him the favourable notice of Prince Miloš Obrenović of Serbia, who appointed Davidović secretary of his offices at Belgrade, and sent him on special diplomatic missions. According to prince Miloš's judgement Davidović was “exceptionally talented in diplomacy”.

His career went upward all until 1835, when he was placed at the head of a committee to draw up a Serbian constitution. And he draw it almost himself, having in mind protection of Serbian citizens before the state and transformation of Serbia into a legal state with protected human and property rights for all. It was called “The Candlemas Constitution” (Сретењски Устав), and unfortunately did not last long. It was too liberal for the taste of Austrian Empire, but also very unfavorable for power hungry Prince Miloš. Constitution was abolished after being less than three weeks in force.

After that, Davidović withdrew from Belgrade to Smederevo, where he died on March 24th 1838. This is a monument to this great man in Smederevo, at which there is an inscription: “To Dimitrije Davidović, father of Serbian publishing. Association of Journalists”.
