Steemit's Top Self Voters: 28 June 2017 Report

in #stats7 years ago (edited)

This looks at Steemit users who 'self vote' on their own posts and comments. It is an interesting debate whether or not this is acceptable behaviour, but this report shines a light on the voters who are currently engaging most actively in the practice. At this stage the post only looks at self votes on their own account, but in future will also take into account voting practices on linked accounts.

Selection Criteria:

  • Self Vote % of 80% or above
  • Self Vote Count > 5
  • Top 50 Users by Number Self Votes

This seems like an odd path of numbers to go down. But your account name is analytics lol, I just got the impression as a reader that I should have a negative feeling on the people doing this (but I did read the comments to this post as well which influenced thought). I upvote every single comment I make and a ton of other peoples too, I think it should just be automatically. I just seen a post about this https://steemit.com/steem/@flipstar/upvoting-your-own-comments-yay-or-nay-a-newbie-dolpinhs-view

I think the focus of this post shouldn't be how much a person votes for themselves as much as presented in a way like "Why are these people using this site if they are only interacting with themselves?" I guess just a different road to a similar destination.

There's been a few posts about this recently, after the hard fork it may become a much easier strategy to self vote 100% and keep cycling the rewards within your own account (e.g. the Jerry Banfield example https://steemit.com/hf20/@jerrybanfield/we-double-our-steem-power-upvoting-ourselves-every-181-days).

In the post you link to, the author appears to advocate a mix of self-voting and voting others, which seems completely fair. If you've made an investment into Steemit as they have then it's fair game.

However, some of the accounts above have upvoted themselves 30+ times in a day and not voted for anyone else.

The idea of this account is just to provide the data without passing judgement, will look at updating the language to make it more neutral in future!

I am not against self voting, but anything above 50% just seems bad etiquette, while some of these 80% plus statistics are just egregious. Some of these users are also getting a good number of sincere votes from others. I wonder if their community support would dry up if this information was more well known.

Besides the obvious, what benefit beyond monetary gain does upvoting oneself really give you?

People also use it to push their comments to the top, so they get seen more.

I feel like its fine to vote however people feel. It is their vote to do with what they wish.

I vote for myself a lot too but I have not been doing so with a very high percentage because I want to have some voting power left for other good posts. If there are no good posts, then I go looking for some.

I find it more fun to upvote with power, especially in the comments section of posts to help fuel some dialog.

It feels better to give than to receive.

Also, how many people follow on of the top 20 money making blogs simply to upvote anything they do, so they can collect the curation reward for a guaranteed $1500.00 post or better?

That is possible right? Just follow the big money making blogs and vote for every post and watch the money roll in?

AIUI - If you vote in the first minute, 99% of your curation rewards go to the author. If you vote after an hour, probably 50-100 people are in front of you in the line for curation rewards... so how much would you actually receive from this strategy? I think this worked best in the early days of steemit before the update to give curation rewards to the author in the case of early votes.
