Steem USA Statewars - Day 2 - Favorite City - Savannah Georgia

in #statewars7 years ago

There are many great cities to choose from in Georgia but one of my favorites is Savannah.  It is very historic, has some beautiful architecture and it is close to the ocean, so you can find a nice beach to relax at if you get tired of wandering through the city  ;)

Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia and was established in 1733 on the Savannah River.   It attracts millions of visitors every year.  I will share some interesting facts about Savannah, some of these pictures were not taken by me, I have not been there in a long time so I don't have a good collection of photos from there, yet...

In 1966 the US Government designated Savannah a Historic District making the city one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country.  Above is a photo from Forsyth Park, a large city park that occupies 30 acres in the historic district.

Above is an image of the City Market area, it has been the commercial and social center of historic Savannah since the 1700's.

This is the entrance to Savannah’s Colonial Park Cemetery, it was opened around the mid 1700's and serves as the final resting place for many of the city’s earliest citizens including Confederate soldiers and African-American slaves.

The Pirate’s House is a restaurant situated a block from the Savannah River and it first opened all the way back in 1753.

The Marshall House, one of the oldest hotels in Savannah was built in 1851.  It is said to be haunted because it served as a hospital during the civil war.  So if you believe in ghosts probably don't want to stay at this hotel ;)

They even celebrate Mardi Gras in Savannah :)

River Street in Savannah completely fills up with people and Mardi Gras celebrations occur much the same way as in New Orleans :)

Well this is basically just the tip of the iceberg, if you enjoy history, historic architecture and nature, Savannah is definitely a great place to explore.  If you want to learn more you can always check out their website http://www.savannah.com/

Maybe we can go soon so you can take more pictures. ;)

I just love the name! This city looks pretty interesting! Definitely I would love to visit!

Awesome post! Like your photos

I think my wife watched some TV show that was supposed to take place in Savannah, but I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head. Looks like a fun place to celebrate Mardi Gras with a lot of history that's rare to find in the US since everything gets torn down and this country is so young.

Yep, compared to other countries the USA is still very very young. Not sure about any shows, I know some movies have been filmed there, parts of Forest Gump were filmed in Savannah also Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil was filmed there...

Beautyfull city💜

Are you from georgia?? My portal takes me back to the state below it!!! That haunted tours photo is wow... i like valdosta and cecil (the race track and summit of course)

This was a very nice write up. Thank you for all of the great information. It has been quite some time since I have been to Georgia. I think even then I was basically just passing through to get to Florida. That probably is the case for a large portion of people :) Savannah is definitely someplace I would like to take a longer look at though. Especially after reading your post. -@bozz

its a green city :)
