DON'T BE QUICK TO TAKE SIDE

It is natural to take side, to prefer a party over the other. It is part of us and there are certain factors that influence this to a greater degree. These factors include family, religion tribe, colleagues at different bodies. What it means is that you are tended to support or take side with someone from your family, someone from your religion, tribe or someone who is your colleagues of same profession over the other who is not sharing common ground with you. A lot of times this usually lead to poor judgement and twisted truth. If you must make a difference and be a good leader and agent of change, then you must not be quick to take side, there is the need to look at the facts without bias of mind.

WHY DO WE TAKE SIDE?

It is common sense that we take side this is based on certain reasons which are linked to the factors stated above. Some of these reasons are as follows;

1. It is easy to believe someone you have something in common with than others. This is so because you have been with him and perhaps have personal experience with him, so to an extent you can tell what he can or cannot do. It is therefore easier to believe his assertion over the other.
2. Emotional ground. We seem to take side with people we know more because especially when it is an act with undesirable after effect. We want to empathize with them and therefore look for ways to exonerate them. So we easier accept their excuses and short comings. We provide soft landing for them and shield them from impending danger. Sometimes we are aware of their irresponsibility and fault but we rather push it away from them.
3. Relationship cord playing out. Like I posited earlier, the issue of family, tribe, religion, these three especially have a way of waiting for you. There is this wriggling in you that keeps reminding you that this is your brother, that after everything you will meet again. And yes, you are going to meet again at home, you will meet again in you community or even state. Again you will meet in church or mosque. And you will want to prove that you once show him or her love. You want to be seen a better brother or sister. This is one thing that beclauded our judgement and pushes us to take side. We close one eye on the real fact and put on the protective coat on our own and justice suffers.

CONSEQUENCES OF TAKING SIDE

There are dangers of side taking and the consequences can at times be have double edge affecting both party. It is therefore important we avoid it and allow a natural cause to play out. The following conditions are direct result of taking side;
When you take side, you have sown the seed of discord and brought in injustice. Remember there is always a karma effect and a reprisal action from every act of misjudge. When you take side without waiting to find out the details, when the truth comes out it will be difficult for you to withdraw your support and this gives you out easily. You may be siding the right person but when you do that in haste without due consideration, your argument will be taken with wrong interior motive. People will say because you already take side, that you are doing everything to show your man is right, meanwhile he is right. It is because your support was not based on logic.
When you take side, you are likely damaging an innocent man for an offence he knew nothing about and exonerating a culprit. And you know what? It is only a matter of time and all will be made open. Taking side can lead to punishment of the wrong person over an offender.
It prevents you from taking appreciate action to forstall further occurrence. When you take side in haste, it means you have chosen to look down on the real fact. And when the root cause is not know, the tendency for reoccurring is high. You can not stop a disaster from further happening when you failed to find out what really is the cause. For instance, a maintenance engineer forgot a tool in an engine and that caused an accident, then because you are also an engineer you pushed it away and blamed it on the pilot without proper investigation. It means similar incident and error from the engineer can happen because the former was not discovered and right action taken to forstall it.

CONCLUSION

On the whole, while it seems practically inevitable to take side, it is important to take due consideration, carry out fact-finding and proper investigation to know the fact and where the arrow points before deciding whether to take side if necessary at all. This will give room to sound judgement. It will also prevents further occurrence of misfortune and promote fairness and good justice where peace can reign.
