Steemit Story Slam Challenge 1: Stuck in an elevator (original flash fiction)

Trevor is cautiously observing this beautiful blonde girl, standing next to him in an elevator. In his long career, Trevor has already mastered the art of stalking people in elevators, without getting noticed. He mostly pretends to look at this big mirror on one of the walls. So far he was never caught; especially by this blonde girl.

Trevor could not remember how many times they were sharing this elevator and that says a lot because Trevor loves to count. He knows how many bricks are there starting from his house to the car and he knows exactly how many times he has taken that road already. That makes Trevor a perfect accountant.

Sadly, he always wanted to quit it all and start his journey around the world as a writer. However, the furthest he got for last 10 years was printing out a letter of resignation. That letter is now somewhere in a dump alongside with used baby diapers and some empty bottles of cheap rum.

Rum helped Trevor a lot during those years, yet it might have damaged his brains a little. Trevor cannot understand how he would not remember the exact amount of times he shared an elevator with this blonde girl. That is the only thing they share after all. It is so disrespectful, yet, Trevor cannot change it now. He wishes that he could ask, but who in the world, apart from him, would know that.

You could not tell from the first glance that Trevor is not feeling happy. Here he is - a loving husband and father, standing in the elevator after a long day at the office, waiting to get into his car and drive back home to his family.

That is exactly how he was seen by Lynda - the blonde girl. She considered herself to be happy as well. However, Lynda knew that she is by far not the smartest person on the earth. That is why she was always shy to start a conversation. However, she also knew it was the 32nd time that she has shared the same elevator with Trevor and still, they have not introduced each other or even said hello.

After all this time it would be too strange to break the ice now. Also - a little dangerous, because with all the research she did on Trevor, Lynda might say something she is not supposed to know. She has done it in the past and she does not want to repeat her mistakes; at least, not with a loving husband.

Of course, Lynda will create all sorts of unrealistic scenarios about her time in an elevator with Trevor, while sitting in a metro for 2 hours. She always loved to daydream. It made her a believer that one day there will be enough courage to take action.
Only a few more floors, before Trevor and Lynda will go back to their own lives and elevator will stand as empty as a glass of whiskey in alcoholic’s hands.

However, those few floors might take a while, when the elevator is not moving.

Trevor was stuck in an elevator before and he knew that it might take some time before someone comes to help.

“It is funny how after all those times we have been on this elevator, we are only stuck now,” Trevor tried to be funny and break the ice.

“To be exact, it is the 32nd time, Trevor. It is funny how it took us exactly the same amount of times as you have years, isn’t it?” Lynda tried her best as well.

With all the preparation… it is only a little awkward for Trevor and Lynda to be alone in this elevator now. Why did they have to speak? And the fascinating part is that they will never know how long it will take for everything to get back to normal. If ever.

The elevator starts to move. The doors open on the ground floor. Neither Trevor nor Lynda can leave. It looks like they were stuck not only because of elevator’s problems. So it is time to make a decision.

Only one car has left a parking lot that night.
