Splinterlands - World War Storm8 (Weekly Post)

In the early days of mobile apps one of the most popular game genres was PvP and Storm8 which created a great hit in World War was no exception. Today Storm8 is worth at least $300 million based on a merger in Jan. 2020. Story Link Here. With so much competition now and advancement in technology I highly doubt World War would be as popular as it was first introduced in 2009. Yet some games on steem blockchain such as holy bread and next colony are similar in game play as World War.

World War differences with Splinterlands

World War is a PvP game with very basic graphics. It is mostly numbers and pictures with zero animation. So even Splinterland's card matches have more animation than World War. The game was easy to play because the rules were little and simple. At the beginning players get to choose their country of origin and each country has its own advantages. They were USA, China, Russia, and Germany. The game had basic stats such as health, ammo, and energy. Each one of those stats is regenerated after a certain specific time and players have to be in the game a few minutes a day to use up the ammo and energy. The basis of the game is to amass the most amount of digital dollars and building up the strongest military in the game.

Yet in World War the action and interaction between players can get intense. At its prime in popularity many top players would hold events to provide free digital money for others to win. The basis of the game is to attack an opponent in battle with your military offense while building up a defense to withstand other opponent's attacks. The attacks once executed will have results in a matter of seconds. The build up of offense such as airplanes, tanks, and battle ships would all just be numbers. Also similar for defense in shields, defense missiles, and turrets would all be numbers. The more offense or defense a player has the better their chances of winning in combat.

Back in the day before discord or reddit players interacted on forums and storm8 had its own dedicated website with a forum. That was where players could communicate outside of the game. The interaction was very memorable because while I was in school I would schedule my study periods around times where events occurred.

Now in Splinterlands similarly outside of the game interactions can be done on facebook, telegram, discords, and twitter. So many different platforms to choose from and not any one is just dedicated to Splinterlands. A much faster and easier way for all players of the game to interact.

World War Similarities with Splinterlands

As in both games ranking is visible by all. Top players are ranked on monthly and daily basis. The goal in both games is to be the best player with the highest score in the game. Furthermore both games are digital in the form of digital assets. I remember when I played World War the only way to sell the digital assets was via selling the account, which was very feasible since I would grow an account in 8-12 weeks and could sell it for around $15. While in Splinterlands I can now trade or sell cards to earn crypto or currency. Splinterlands by far is much easier and profitable in selling than World War.

Both games although graphically are not up to par with a lot of today's high graphics games the pictures used in both games were very articulate and appeal to many gamers like myself. Both games had artists develop graphics in the games. Whether it was a picture of a battle ship in World War to a specific card in Splinterlands all the art work was specific only to the game.

Updated Games

This comparison between World War and Splinterlands should best be seen as a comparison in how technology in mobile apps have evolved over the decade. World War was introduced before 2009 while Splinterlands really started become a playable game in 2019. That is a 10 year difference in development. The game play and rules in Splinterland is far superior to that of World War, but it was great to had played World War back in the day. Although Storm8 has discontinued World War they have kept the same theme in developing their newer games. I hope Splinterlands can continue to grow in popularity and progress as long as it can. With Storm8 proving that mobile games no matter how simple can still become a hit I hope Splinterlands can follow in its footsteps.
