Spain 1-1 Russia (3-4 on pen): Sloppy Spain ELIMINATED as Koke and Aspas miss penalties

Spain once again went out of a competition at the hands of the host nation, with Russia coming out on top in the last 16 in the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.
La Roja have faced now nine host countries in European Championships and World Cups. In 1934 they lost against Italy and there was plenty of scandal at the World Cup, in 1950 they went out against Brazil in the semi finals and in 1980 they lost again to Italy in the European Championships.

Memorably in 1984 they reached the final against France but were beaten by a Michel Platini goal following by an Arconada mistake. Then they were beaten again in Germany 1988, England 1996, Korea and Japan 2002 and the previous time was Portugal in 2004.

It was a frustrating evening for Spain against Russia, having gone ahead through an own-goal and then Dzyuba levelled from the penalty spot after a penalty given away by Gerard Pique. They couldn't find the back of the net again and after extra-time they went out on penalties.
