Surfing the breakwall, Iluka, NSW, Australia

The coastal town of Iluka, northern NSW, is located at the head of the mighty Clarence River on the northern side. To this day, Iluka remains relatively unspoiled by the overdevelopment affecting many coastal towns.

It's a popular spot for fishing, catching crabs, boating and surfing. And after you've had enough of that, you can head to Sedgers Reef Hotel right by the river for a pub meal and a couple of beers. It looks a little run down, but it has lots of character and great views. 

Just down the road from the pub is the North Wall. This breakwall, which protects the nearby boat harbour and Iluka's small fishing fleet, is a popular spot for surfers. When the swell is up, you can jump off the breakwall straight into the waves and save yourself the long paddle out. 

I took the following images on 8 September 2017 with my Nikon D800 and Nikkor 200.0-500.0 mm f/5.6 telephoto lens. The following day, a surfer was attacked by a Great White Shark at this very spot. He received a nasty gash to the leg but was otherwise OK.

While the surfers were out having fun amongst the waves, some had to go to work.
