RE: Philadelphia Hates Winners: Basketball's modern version of Notre Dame in their backyard and they want nuthin to do with it

in #sports6 years ago

Villanova Basketball has had to combat more than apathetic Philly fans. I went to Villanova and had conversations about the basketball program with some of my professors. University professors are privy to inside info, certainly more than students are.

One of my professors told me that after the 1985 National Championship and ensuing spike in enrollment, then president Father Dobin and the University Trustees didn't like it. They didn't like Villanova having a reputation as a basketball school, and they didn't want students coming to the school because of its basketball program. Perhaps this is why Villanova basketball didn't get much momentum after the 1985 win.

Regardless of white collar or blue collar--it doesn't matter what color your shirt is--Philly fans like a winner, I don't care if it's a game of pocket ball.
