World Cup: Two days to the world cup in Russia, How Africans has fared so far?

Jose Gimenez scored an 89th-minute header to secure a 1-0 win for Uruguay against Egypt in their World Cup opener on Friday, just as the North Africans appeared to have escaped with a point despite missing key striker Mohamed Salah.

Gimenez met a Carlos Sanchez free kick to score the goal that broke a run since 1960 of failing to win in the opening game of the World Cup finals.

Egypt came within minutes of earning a point largely thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, who bravely dived to snatch the ball from Luis Suarez's feet and then flung himself through the air to tip a Edinson Cavani volley wide.

Uruguay gained in strength and purpose as the game progressed and it became clear that Salah, who injured his shoulder last month, was going to stay on the bench.

Before that, Egypt had rarely looked in trouble in a scrappy match at the less-than-packed Yekaterinburg Arena, though without Salah they also did little to threaten the Uruguay goal.

Suarez squandered a great first-half chance by firing into the side netting when the ball broke loose after a corner, and forced another good save from El-Shenawy in the opening moments of the second period.

Salah's absence came as a surprise after coach Hector Cuper had said on Thursday he was almost 100 percent certain to play.

The Liverpool striker, who turned 26 on Friday, injured his shoulder in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, and millions of Egyptians had been on tenterhooks to see if he would recover in time for the tournament.

He now has four more days to work on his fitness before Egypt face Russia in St Petersburg next Tuesday, while Uruguay will play Saudi Arabia the next day in Rostov.

MORROCO LOST TO IRAN:

A stoppage-time own goal from substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz gave Iran a dramatic 1-0 win over Morocco in their World Cup Group B opener on Friday.

Iran left-back Ehsan Hajsafi whipped in a free kick five minutes into added time and Bouhaddouz launched himself at the ball, flashing a header past his own keeper Munir Mohamedi.

The Iranians, who had not won a World Cup game since their victory over the United States in 1998, celebrated as if they had won the tournament but they now have a chance in a group where they next face favourites Spain and Portugal.

Morocco, who enjoyed more possession throughout, began in aggressive fashion, taking the game to their opponents and overloading their right flank as they targeted Hajsafi.

That approach almost paid off when Nordin Amrabat whipped in a dangerous cross from the right but Younes Belhanda's header from an acute angle flashed wide.

Iran were missing the calming influence of suspended holding midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi as Morocco over-ran them in the centre of the park with the clever Mbark Boussoufa directing play as the African side frequently attacked in numbers.

Morocco almost turned that initial pressure into a goal in the 19th minute when following a scramble in the area, Medhi Benatia's shot was well saved by Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand.

Iran's Portuguese coach Carlos Quieroz had clearly given his side instructions to defend deep and look to break on the counter-attack and two minutes before the break that approach almost bore fruit.

Striker Sardar Azmoun broke clear though the middle but he shot straight at Mohamedi who got up quickly to keep out a follow-up effort from Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

Chances were at a premium after the break but a well-struck effort from Morocco's Hakim Ziyech brought out a fine save from Beiranvand nine minutes from the end before the dramatic finale.

As a new user to steemit you may not be aware of how poorly people who copy and paste the works of others on steemit are looked upon. There is a very strong Nigerian presence on steemit. I would suggest strongly that you seek them out for guidance on a proper post.

This is a blatant copy of the ESPN story with even the same picture. You are very lucky cheetah bot did not hit you. Check the #wafica tag and try to get intouch with @wafrica or ask some of the other Nigerians about posting. They are going to be your biggest critics and downvoters for plagiarized content. Ask and learn, you still have time to correct your mistakes.

  1. place a source reference to the stories and the pictures used.
  2. tell in at least 1/3 the amount of copy and pasted words why you wanted to share the stories. Example.
That you wanted to share the stories of these two games particularly because you are a big fan or supporter, or whatever of the teams involved, or that while watching the game you though their blow by report was right on, something that explains why, just tell us instead of making it look like you are only here for the money.

If you fix it I will come back and vote, just type @bashadow fixed or something similar.
