Tom Brady - certainly not the greatest sportsman of all time ... but I would suggest the greatest WINNER
American Football - an extraordinary sport to me and many others because every part of play is a set-play, a pre-designed set of offensive moves by the attacking side and a strategised system of defence by the side without the ball.
As in most ball sports, having the ball and keeping the ball is fundamental.
Over about 4-5 hours of American Football, there are 4 quarters and a total of about 40 minutes of play and a lot of adverts and a lot of Gaga during the final.
Now that is a very unkind and disingenuous summary, I know. American Football includes some of the most extraordinarily fast, mobile, lithe, adaptable, skilled, athletic and 'out there' athletes who have ever graced a sports field.
Baseball and Football are the US national sports, even though Basketball is the only sport which the US invented. So, moan if you disagree but it happens to be true (Tiddly Winks - India).
Sunday 5th February, 2017. Superbowl Sunday. The New England Patriots are 27-3 down against the Atlanta Falcons. We are into the third quarter. This is when you have to get outside yourself as a sportsperson. 24 points down. 7 points for a touchdown plus conversion of the kick. Your team has one field goal to its name. Outlook: FUBAR. Strategy: Call your Mum.
Tom Brady, Quarterback for the New England Patriots: in the US you love him or you hate him (ignorance) - deflategate? (he copped it) - so your team is looking doomed. You have already won 4 Superbowls ... your place in the Hall of Fame is assured, your whole family is Football Royalty!

You win the game; you are the first ever to win 5 Superbowls as a Quarterback (playmaker).
You have earned so many millions that it just does not matter. Hats off to Tom Brady! Knowing HOW to win is invaluable.
In a high stakes game, in the 100m final, in the World Cup Final you only ever remember the winner.

@edgar.ortega11, thank you - I do understand the partisanship but ... you have to give it to the man, as you graciously did. He does know how to win which is a very rare and sometimes inexplicable trait in an athlete.
Basketball was invented by a Canadian, in the US.
It was a good game today. I watched most of it. Our Canadian league has a different approach to overtime though. If one team scores, the other team gets a chance to score. If they fail, game over.
Yes, you are absolutely right about basketball - what is even funnier is that they used closed nets for a long time and had to punch the ball back out of the net!

Yeah, my comment was a bit off topic, all apologies. You're right though. Peach baskets. A man would climb a ladder to retrieve the ball, before they decided to cut a hole in the bottom. That could be myth though.
As for Brady, I haven't paid much attention to him, but he does seem poised in the pocket and handles pressure well. He doesn't strike me as the type to taunt, more like the type who, when he's around, people are just naturally pissed that he's there.
No apologies needed my friend. I am just astounded at the singular presence to the situation that the very best athletes have. There is a presence and aura about them. I have half written another post about the very elite sports people. They have a different view. Things slow down. There is an avenue where for many there is a crack.
I forgot that it was peach nets - and yes, good recall! Believe it or not it is supposed to have been my lot who first made planks under their feet which were meant to slide on snow!
I played hockey. The only moment time slowed for me... was when I was coming off the ice after receiving a big hit.
Haha! I have some very funny sports stories - but the one I shall tell here is that aged 15 I was in the school cricket XI. We were playing at Eton and my brother (older) was hit three times in one over (series of 6 pitches). Aged 15, and by a long way the youngest on the team I stormed the pitch and was going to give 'what for' to the tall and aggressive fast bowler (pitcher), probably the son of Lord Ponsonby-Smooth! . Eton is a pretty posh sort of place and I entirely forgot where I was. Much to my relief the rest of the team and the Coach were close behind! Funny the memories that stick!
Brother was fine but the pride bruises are always worse than the real ones!

That Jeannie Buss is just strange, imagine having that amount of dislike for someone you don't know and you can include the dimple on his chin, the way he walks and his dress sense - that is kind of admitting you are a sociopath!! And it is not just her - he is ranked in the top ten most hated sports stars in the US because ... he is good? His changing hair cut, there is a weird thing here. I have actually half written a post about hatred towards people one does not know and it centres around politicians, sports stars and celebrities (film, tv, musicians/performing artists, models, personalities, designers, business moguls).
It is quite extraordinary the level of serious bad feeling that people can have - full on loathing, detesting, violent animosity, etc.
I stopped because it was all very negative.
Maybe I should revisit it!
well, it really isn't "fair" that he wins so much. the runner up team members should at least get trophies or stickers or something for making the "effort" to show up to the game! (in case of any doubt, yes, this was a joke)
