Dollar Store Hoodoo: Protection spell
Hoodoo is all about working with what you've got. Traditional practitioners could not jump on Amazon and order everything they needed from their smart phones, they had to be creative. For todays post, I challenged myself to put together a home protection spell with only the items I could find at the local dollar store. Obviously, no dollar store is going to carry everything you need to perform the work 'by the book' but that is the true magic behind Hoodoo.
I walked away with only 3 items totaling $3.21 so this will be a vary basic spell. Black, white and blue candles can all be used for protection spells. In my case, I found a white 7 day jar candle with nothing printed on it. Regardless of what your spells are for, white candles can be used as a substitute for any other color (remember that colored candles are a relatively new thing). I also grabbed a mirror for reversing any work done to me and fragrance oil to dress the candle with. Now, this is going to be the wild card of the spell... I'm using apple cinnamon oil. Cinnamon is a great herb for protection and speeding up spell work. Apples, on the other hand, are for sweetening up a situation and are commonly found in love spells. My hope is that this will sweeten up and smooth over and any situation or negativity this candle may protect me from or reverse back to a source.
Start by cleansing your hands, candle and mirror of any energies that may already be attached. I used Florida water which was something I already had and is not sold at the dollar store (so I cheated a little....shhh). On the bottom of the mirror, write down who the candle is meant to protect and what they needed protected from. You could also write on a petition paper or use a picture and place that under the mirror. Put a FEW DROPS of oil in the top of the candle... remember you want to protect your home, not burn it down. Traditionally you would pray the 23rd Psalm over the candle but if you're not down with that, simply substitute with any protection prayer for your chosen deity. Place the candle on your front porch, the most used door or an alter. As with any spiritual work, have a clear intention when you start and put that intention into your work. Thank you for reading and goodluck on your journeys.
I like the idea in your first paragraph, it's about working with tools at hand and being creative.
Going form that, I can just make up any ritual that I want as long as the symbols make sense to me and agree with my intention. Would you agree?
Even if you don't agree, I'm coming with that idea. No offense meant, I am interested in your opinion, but I'm utterly bewildered by the use of herbs, oils, and other dressings. There's too many to get a handle on.
