Question #38

Why does God allow sickness?

Bible Answer

Isaiah 55:9

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose

Matthew 17:14-18

14 ¶ And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

Hebrews 12:5-11

5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Luke 13:10-16

10 ¶ And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

Supplemental Answer

As we all know both sickness and suffering is not an easy thing to deal with. For those who believe in power of God suffering and sickness should not be the cause us to lose faith in God. God is good, and His loves endures forever, his love and goodness remains yesterday, today and tomorrow, all the time God is good and even when we are suffering. Even we go to the ultimate of suffering the "death" we should and always remember that this acts is one of the greatness and goodness of God. It doesn't mean that pain is always from God or we always reserved the sick God to teach us a spiritual lesson. In a world that stain of sin, sickness, disease, and death is always with us. We are fallen creatures, having a physical body prone to disease and illness. Some sickness, pain and diseases are the result of only natural course of things in this world. Sickness can also be the result of a demonic attack. The Bible describes several events when physical suffering is caused by Satan and his demons. So, some pain is not from God, but from Satan. Even in these instances, God is still in control. Sometimes God allows sin and/or Satan to cause physical suffering. Even when sickness is not directly from God, he is still using it according to his perfect will.

Either god doesn't want to help or it is incapable of helping - or it doesn't exist.
The gods are either impotent, evil or don't exist.
Sorry - that's the evidence.

How dis you say that? When we are suffering with a sickness, disease, or injury, we usually focus solely on our own suffering. In the midst of a trial of sickness, it is very difficult to focus on what good God might bring about as a result. In Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. This verse help you to understand and to reminds us that God can bring about good from any situation. Many people look back on times of sickness as times when they grew closer to God, learned to trust Him more, and/or learned how to truly value life. This is the perspective God has because He is sovereign and knows the end result. This does not mean sickness is always from God or that God always inflicts us with sickness to teach us a spiritual lesson. In a world tainted by sin, sickness, disease, and death will always be with us. We are fallen beings, with physical bodies prone to disease and illness. Some sickness is simply a result of the natural course of things in this world. Sickness can also be the result of a demonic attack. The Bible describes several instances when physical suffering was caused by Satan and his demon, So, some sickness is not from God, but from Satan. Even in these instances, God is still in control. God sometimes allows sin and/or Satan to cause physical suffering. Even when sickness is not directly from God, He will still use it according to His perfect will.
