Can anyone develop humility?
Of late I have been mulling over what it means to be humble. I wondered whether I met some of the criteria of being humble and so hence the reason for this philosophising in my writing today. It set myself no easy task. I needed to think of a my plan of attack. Firstly, it made sense to get a definition of humility. According to Merriam-Webster, (which I found on Google), humility is the freedom from pride or arrogance. To me It basically means to be modest.
Secondly, I decided to think big with famous well known spiritual people who present as humble in our society today. There are plenty; my mind goes to the beautiful Dalai Lama, Pope Francis and His Holiness Puija Swami Chidanand Saraswathji. There are many more of course. I also know that everyday people such as neighbours, friends and family members possess a good amount of humility. Humble people do not seek the limelight and do not want accolades for their deeds. They are people who feel an inner self-satisfaction for helping others. Ego does not take over, they do not feel that they are better than anyone else.
Lastly, I have come to the conclusion that no matter whether you are spiritual, religious, or an atheist you can be humble. I believe that it is a human being's personal state. It is up to the individual person's ability to reflect on humility and choose to take control of one's ego. It is very achievable. Certainly, a spiritually aware person is likely to be humble. Such people understand their divine connection to the Source, the consciousness and the Oneness of the Universe. It is also knowing that we as humans are all connected and doing the best we go on our individual journeys of learning. It is also about helping one another along the way because we are all going to the same place on the Other Side.
I am working on being humble; spiritually walking the talk. I find it humbling when others let me help them.
Regards
Angie
This is beautiful.
Walking the road of humility is hard but worthwhile.
Those who are humble see the good in themselves and also accept and appreciate the good in others.
Thanks for sharing
I like what you say.
beautiful lesson on humility @angiemitchell! I love that quote too, if more people would adopt that as their goal or mission just think what could happen. putting others first and walking in humbleness..quite a foreign concept to a material world. great post!
