Brian calls me one Day and tells me he just received a Huge Speeding Fine!
Sick and tired of speeding on the Roads where there are Traffic Cops , wants to fly ( no Speed Laws enforced there)
Sounds Wonderful ,but the cost and Maintenance on a 'Plane and the task of getting a licence?, are prohibitive!
Spots an advert for someone selling Gyrocopter Kits in Cape Town, Brian is on the next flight Down!
When he gets back, can't wait to tell me, Guy took him up way above Table Mountain , Weather was so bad they had grounded all regular flights, Does not deter this Fellow , off they go .
Still way up there , Engine gives a cough ,and then cuts dead, Brian reckons his time has come !
No worries, the Guy glides them back to the field from which they took off. Only when they land and the top Rotor slows down does he realise it is raining!
No prizes for guessing who goes about ordering a Kit?
The Kit arrives , Brian wastes no time on starting to assemble. I cannot recall the recommended Motors , Mccullough or Rotax, I think!
Remember the VW Creedo, Brian built a Big Bore Modified VW Air cooled Flat Four Motor for it!
One Major Problem ( turns up later) ,even without the Fans on and using a Magneto , the Motor is still considerably heavier than the items recommended .
The unit passes it's Flight tests, and a Gyrocopter does not require the same level licence as you require to pilot a plane.
Because of the extra weight of the Motor, Brian's unit is not as manouverable or Nimble as Units with the far lighter ( and more expensive) recommended motor's.
This is quite upsetting to Brian and when the expensive Top Rotor hit a Wall while taking off , Shattering.
The Final Straw in a grand plan, the cost of Speeding on the Roads no longer appears Prohibitive!

ha ha, reminds me of a friend of mine back in university - he bought land hoping to build a small air strip on it and build a plane - Bought a house intending to be mortgage free by the time he was thirty - Saw him 15 yrs later, sans land, sans plane and married with two kids. "Say, Bob, what about your plans for financial freedom?" He winces. "Nobody pays off their mortgage, Man." ...Uh huh ....LOL!!
