So most Steemians use a chat app called Discord. You can create a free account here: https://discordapp.com/
A lot of communities have their own server on Discord. You can join them by clicking an invitation link you often find in posts related to a certain community.
A good place to get started is Steem Terminal. As I mentioned in the comment I made with the @newbieresteemday account, Steem Terminal is set up especially to guide newcomers. Once you've created your Discord account, you can click the link below and accept the invitationby @thekittygirl to join the Steem Terminal Discord server. They will have an answer to all your questions, and you can meet others:
If you want to find out which communities have a server on Discord, it would be a good idea to join the server of @steemexplorers. In their server, they list a lot of the communities on Discord.
The benefit of Discord is that you can learn things and get to know people in the chat rooms without being limited by Resource Credits - this means you can talk as much as you want. 😁
Discord also allows you to send Direct Messages to people if you want to ask someone something. For that, however, you do need their Discord name. (Once you join a couple of servers on Discord, you can just click someone's name to send him or her a DM.
