Plataneras / Banana trees
Hoy quiero enseñaros algo muy típico de Canarias: los plátanos. Conozco un paseo muy agradable por un acantilado sobre el mar que permite adentrarse fácilmente por algunos cultivos de plataneras. Se encuentra a la izquierda de Bajamar (Tenerife).
Es un paseo muy bonito porque a mano derecha hay unas pequeñas zonas de lava volcanica visible desde lo alto. A ellas se puede bajar por una senda poco conocida para bañarse o tomar el sol. Verano es una zona nudista. De todas formas, hay que tener cuidado donde uno se pone o se baña aquellos días que hay oleaje.
El plátano es un excelente nutriente que aporta calorías y potasio. A nuestro famoso tenista Rafael Nadal lo podréis ver habitualmente consumiendo plátanos en los torneos. También, muchos nadadores de grandes travesías utilizan este alimento para mantener su rendimiento.
El cultivo del plátano procede del sudeste de Asia. Desde allí pasó a Madagascar y en el siglo V a África. Extendiéndose por la cuenca mediterráneas. A Canarias el cultivo llegó desde Guinea Ecuatorial y fue introducido por los portugueses.
Parece ser que una vez que el cultivo se asentó en las Islas Canarias fueron los españoles los que introdujeron el plátano en América.
El plátano de Canarias es de excelente calidad. A mi me encanta porque tiene un sabor muy dulce y cremoso. Se caracteriza fundamentalmente por unas pintas negras que tiene la cáscara amarilla.
No hay delicia más grande que comer un plátano que ha madurado en la misma planta. Lo probé una vez en un mercado de La Gomera, era de un tamaño muy pequeñito y fue una auténtica delicia.
El cultivo del plátano
La platanera no es un verdadero árbol sino que es una hierba con aspecto de árbol. Es una especie vegetal del género Musa y que pertene a la familia de las musáceas. Hay diversas variedades.
Las plataneras están en zonas con una temperatura en torno a los 25° y con mucho luz. Deben estar a menos de 300 metros de altura. Estas condiciones son idóneas solo en las vertientes norte de las islas Canarias.
Su crecimiento requiere de mucha agua de humo una buena luminosidad y suelos porosos con buen drenaje y de textura arenosa pero no arcilloso y con muchos materiales orgánicos.
Desde que se siembra la planta madre hasta que se obtiene el primer brote, racimo o piña de plátanos pasa un año.
Cuando brota la piña, se procede a embolsarla y se apuntala el racimo con un palo de madera en firma de “Y”, para que no se caiga por el peso
Es preciso embolsar la piña para evitar que algunas enfermedades o plagas dañen la fruta.
El desflorillafo es un laborioso proceso que hay que hacer manualmente y que consiste en cortar la flor que hay al final de cada fruto. Los consumidores apreciamos este proceso fácilmente porque vemos un remate final redondo y negro al final de cada plátano.
El racimo se corta de cada planta justo antes de que maduren los plátanos para procesarlos dos semanas antes de que lleguen al consumidor final.

La explotación del cultivo del plátano comenzó a finales del siglo XIX cuando se instauraron los puertos francos lo que permitió la entrada y salida de mercancías libremente y ha posibilitado la economía de las Islas Canarias
Los ingleses implantaron aquí sus compañías y comenzaron a exportar fundamentalmente a Gran Bretaña. También ellos desarrollaron mucho el cultivo del tomate, fundamentalmente en las áreas sur de las islas, por sus excelentes condiciones climatológicas y temperatura.
Actualmente los canarios están nerviosos porque, si se consuma un Brexit, puede afectarse muchísimo esta economía, ya que el 50% de estos productos se exportan directamente a Inglaterra. Un trámite burocrático alargado haría que se perdiera mucha mercancía.
El cultivo del plátano proporciona trabajo a 35.000 personas en las islas.
En el año 2011 se iniciaron los trámites para la inscripción de el plátano cultivado en Canarias como especie de Indicación Geográfica Protegida
Sin embargo el cultivo del plátano en las Islas Canarias está retrocediendo lamentablemente entre otros factores por la implantación del mercado único europeo y también por la presión urbanística y turística que lo destroza todo. También cada vez son mas potentes los competidores de Sudamérica. Sin embargo todavía existen algunas fincas de plataneras en zonas del litoral norte de las islas de Tenerife, la Palma o Gran Canaria, sobretodo. Excepto en Fuerteventura en las demás islas se cultivan.
Espero que estos cultivos se mantenga mucho tiempo. Da mucha pena ver como paisajes preciosos como el Valle de la Orotava, que antes estaban cubiertos de plataneras, han sido arrasados por urbanizaciones urbanísticas y explotación turística.
Banana trees
Today I want to show you something very typical of the Canary Islands: bananas. I know a very pleasant walk by a cliff on the sea that allows to enter easily by some banana plantations. It is located on the left of Bajamar (Tenerife).

Me gustan los plátanos, hubiera querido ser un plátano, más aún con tan bella vista, es un bonito lugar.
