“Se quedan sin techo los almendrones en Cuba”.

La Habana, Cuba.- “La fiebre por cortarle el techo a los almendrones y convertirlos en descapotables se ha incrementado en los últimos tiempos. Yo tenía mi Ford de dos puertas del año 1955 que originalmente no era descapotable, pero al turista lo que le gusta es ver el paisaje, que el viento le dé en la cara y disfrutar del clima caribeño; por eso decidí transformar mi auto. Ahora oferto estos paseos por La Habana solamente para turistas, es mucho más rentable y gano buen dinero”, nos contó Héctor González, propietario de uno de los muchos almendrones que han sido modificados en la Habana y literalmente les han retirado el techo para “pasear turistas”.

La modalidad parece ser muy rentable para los propietarios de estos almendrones modificados, un recorrido en uno de estos autos puede costar de 20 a 40 dólares. Dentro de los destinos de mayor demanda se encuentran los paseos por el Malecón, Centro Habana, Vedado y La Plaza de la Revolución, los choferes también hacen de guías turísticos.
Muchos de estos almendrones trabajaban como boteros, (taxis para cubanos) pero al recrudecerse las medidas del gobierno para “controlar los precios”, los propietarios se percataron que “el turismo es más rentable y el auto sufre menos desgaste”. El proceso de trasformación y corte del techo de un auto de los años 50 que originalmente no es descapotable es complicado y requiere de las manos de varios “Expertos”.

“Hay que pasar por un proceso para el cambio, primeramente se debe acudir al Registro de Vehículos y solicitar un permiso de transformación, luego conseguir un buen chapista que te pique el techo con una mecha y trate de dejar los detalles bien cubiertos, también hay que hacer un trabajo fino de pintura y tapizado para que parezca original, la cubierta o capota también forma parte de la tapicería, es una inversión bastante grande, gasté unos 3000 CUC, pero sé que lo puedo recuperar fácilmente porque los turistas pagan en dólares, una vez reformado el auto toca pasar por la inspección técnica en el mismo Registro de Vehículos, luego sólo hay que poseer licencia para botear y listo”, explicó Héctor.

El Malecón habanero es la ruta más solicitada, es un recorrido relativamente corto y cuenta con una gran demanda entre los visitantes, según algunos de los choferes es la ruta más rentable porque se ahorra combustible y el cliente siempre queda satisfecho con las vistas de la ciudad.
“Lo que más me piden es el paseo por el Malecón, la verdad es que las vistas no son las mismas si viajas en un auto moderno y con los cristales cerrados, que si viajas en mi Chevrolet del 56 descapotable, disfrutas mas el paseo y la brisa del mar te acaricia el rostro, además montar uno de estos autos es como viajar en el tiempo y regresar a la década del 50 (…) aunque La Habana no ha cambiado mucho desde entonces o ha cambiado pero para mal”, comentó para este diario Junior Soca ex botero y propietario de un Chevrolet 1956 que él mismo dejó sin techo.

“Casi ni se nota que el auto fue modificado, parece que vino descapotable de fabrica, los turistas a veces me preguntan y les paso gato por liebre diciéndole que sí, que es original, pero muchos de los modelos americanos de los 50 que ves aquí con el techo picado nunca se fabricaron descapotables, es un aporte de nosotros los cubanos a las compañías de autos americanas, para hacer dinero se inventa lo que sea porque la cosa está dura”, comentó Raúl Hernández, otro ex botero que ahora trabaja para el turismo.

“Saber inglés e italiano me ayuda mucho porque me comunico mejor y hago mi trabajo de guía, eso me da propinas, de algo me sirvió haber estudiado idiomas en la universidad. Mis compañeros de clase se están muriendo de hambre hoy impartiendo docencia en escuelas primarias y pre universitarios y aquí se gana bien”. Añadió Raúl.
De la gran necesidad nace el ingenio de los cubanos, lograr que un automóvil de más de 50 años siga rodando en las calles con miles de adaptaciones e inventos y sin sus repuestos originales ya es toda una hazaña, transformarlo en descapotable y que luzca como de agencia para generar ingresos es solo uno de los muchos “aportes” a la industria automovilística de los genios cubanos. Viajar a La Habana es como regresar en el tiempo, tomarse una foto encima de uno de estos autos es toda una atracción para el turista.
Cuando nuestro equipo abandonaba la Plaza de la Revolución después de hacer varias entrevistas, uno de estos choferes de “descapotables” exclamó a viva voz. “Se quedan sin techo los almendrones en Cuba”.
