―¡Eureka! ―exclamó repentinamente la doctora Faith Ibraimovich, que permanencia en silencio haciendo notas en el fondo del salón, mientras los demás especulaban sobre las implicaciones de lo que habían visto en el planeta y las noticias llegadas desde la estación BN34.

Varios voltearon exaltados en dirección donde, la siempre silenciosa mujer, se encontraba sentada, y la vieron con los ojos muy abiertos observándolos sonriente, con una expresión que parecía la de una desquiciada.

―¿Se encuentra usted bien doctora? ―preguntó Saul, sorprendido por la actitud de la casi invisible mujer.

―Creo que ya lo entendí ―dijo ella, levando su rubia, pequeña y rechoncha figura, del pupitre donde se encontraba sentada ―. Que tal si los Antiguos, como les hemos llamado, fueran una sociedad tecnobiológica.

―Creo que entiendo su idea doctora ―intervino Carión, en su sonora y vibrante voz sintetizada ―. Durante varios cientos de miles de años, nosotros los inus, dependimos del uso de componentes tecnológicos para superar nuestras limitaciones fisiológicas, eso antes de que muchos decidieran migrar definitivamente a una forma tecnológica de existencia y finalmente abandonáramos la existencia en el mundo tangible.

―Correcto, eso explicaría la carencia de procesadores complejos o de líneas de transmisión de energía y datos en las sondas que hemos encontrado ―continuó la doctora.

―Quiere decir que las naves se acoplarían a los individuos y estos actuarían como partes funcionales de ellas ―dijo Boris Chen, el jefe de los ingenieros.

―No exactamente ―respondió tajante Ibraimovich―. Eso es lo que nosotros haríamos, de una forma débil nos acoplamos a la nave, mediante interfaces neuronales o usando nuestros propias manos y pies como interfaces para operarlas, me refiero a una dependencia más profunda de los dispositivos tecnológicos.

―Por favor explíquese doctora ―exigió Saul.

―Supongan que la estructura de los antiguos fuese tan frágil, que necesitasen de los dispositivos tecnológicos para vivir ―explicó Ibrimovich―. Que debieran, de alguna forma, recurrir al uso de dispositivos tecnológicos como una forma de evolucionar y poder controlar su entorno.

―Y como explica eso las sondas, aun no entiendo ―intervino Da Silva, con el escepticismo plasmado en su rostro.

―Y si no fueran sondas ―respondió Ibraimochich ―. Y si lo que llamamos sondas fueran en realidad los restos de los antiguos, si fueran sus cadáveres.

La mayoría de los presentes no ocultaron su expresión de sorpresa, incluso desde el punto de vista de Saul, el impasible rostro digital de Carión, pareció alterarse, en una mínima mueca de consternación.

―En que basa usted su idea doctora ―preguntó Carducci, sonrojado por la tarea de tener que procesar lo que acababa de insinuar Ibraimovich.

―Es simple ―explicó Ibraimovich―. Hasta el momento no hemos encontrada nada que nos indique con claridad, ¿cuál era la morfología de los antiguos?, pareciese que toda su arquitectura estuviese orientada a dar servicio a estas extrañas naves o sondas, las cuales difieren unas de otras...

―Para una cultura que construya naves en tal cantidad ―continuó Ibaimovich ―. Como la que hemos visto hasta ahora, sería sumamente difícil y poco eficiente, construir tal variedad, como para que no existan dos iguales. Tal vez la forma de la nave, fuera una expresión del individuo que la habita, o mejor dicho la forma como el individuo se muestra ante sus congéneres.

―Entiendo una manera de mostrar su propia individualidad, una expresión de su personalidad ―intuyó Carión.

―¡Correcto! ―exclamó alegremente ibraimovich ―. Luego está la carencia de líneas de energía o datos, así como procesadores o canales de fluidos dentro de las naves, donde sólo los dispositivos de propulsión y el reactor de antimateria difieren de la construcción con bloques multifuncionales ―prosiguió ―. Eso, aunado a los extraños espacios vacíos, aparentemente carentes de formas estándar que indicaran donde debieron haber estado las partes faltantes, me hace pensar que esos espacios debieron haber sido llenados por materia orgánica, que con el transcurrir de miles de millones de años, se ha degradado por completo, dejando sólo el espacio que ocupó.

―Me parece una hipótesis muy atractiva, pero como nos lleva eso a considerar a las naves un cadáver, más que un simple vehículo ―interrogó Saul.

―Suponga que su cuerpo es tan frágil, que no puede soportar un entorno muy diferente a aquel en el que se ha desarrollado y para poder propagarse como especie, necesita de un mecanismo artificial que le permita hacerlo más resistente, como para poder controlar su entorno. Tiene los medios intelectuales, pero no físicos para proliferar, ¿qué hace? ―preguntó Ibraimovich retóricamente ―. Crea esos medios físicos, los humanos lo hemos hecho durante decenas de miles de años, tal vez estas criaturas desarrollaron su capacidad de razonamiento, mucho antes de un cuerpo que les permitiera ir a la par de sus necesidades de exploración intelectual. Y debieron, con lo poco que tuvieron, que empezar a proporcionarse medios para evolucionar…

―Como los cangrejos ermitaños, que aprovechan cualquier concha de molusco vacía, que hallen en su camino, para proporcionarse un mejor hogar. Ellos empezaron a usar herramientas que encontraron en su entorno hasta poder desarrollar mecanismos propios que sirvieran a todas sus necesidades, y así con el transcurrir de miles de generaciones, evolucionaron a la par de lo que llamamos bloques multifuncionales.

―Asombroso, es fascinante su idea doctora ―dijo Saul, sin salir de su estupor.

―El hecho de que los bloques tengan la capacidad de interconectarse, usando diminutos filamentos y conductos ópticos, me hace pensar que tal vez la membrana externa de estos seres también estaría provista de estos filamentos y conductos, lo que les permitiría hacer simbiosis con los bloques y de esa manera conformar una unidad, un individuo.

―Pero la carencia de una forma regular que ocupar en las naves sondas no dificultaría que la estructura del cuerpo de un ser vivo se acomodase en ellas ―intervino Da Silva aun escéptico―. Entiendo que los seres vivos diferimos unos de otros, aun entre los de la misma especie, pero nuestras diferencias morfológicas no son tan extremas como las que podemos ver en los vacíos de las naves.

―No sería problema, si pensamos en cómo están construidas las naves y como construimos nuestros propios accesorios ―replicó Ibraimovich.

―No le entiendo ―dijo Carducci consternado.

―Es simple, nuestros exoesqueletos, los usados por el ejército o en tareas de construcción y minería, están conformados para complementar nuestra estructura morfológica, tenemos pistones y fuelles para simular músculos, barras de titanio o nanotubos de carbono, para simular huesos y procesadores y líneas eléctricas y de datos, para simular nuestro sistema nervioso; estamos tratando de imitar a nuestro propio cuerpo, lo mismo pasa con los androides que construimos ―explicó ―. Qué tal si los antiguos, fuesen un tipo de organismo colonial intelectualmente avanzado, un mismo individuo, estaría formado por la comunidad de cientos o miles de individuos más pequeños, que se complementarían unos a otros, pero que su integración sería tal que, juntos, conformarían una sola individualidad. Un organismo así vería el mundo como conformado por bloques individuales intercambiables, que se complementarían para formar un todo, no tendría órganos especializados, cada bloque sería un organismo completo, que viviría en simbiosis con los demás para formar un organismo mayor e intelectualmente superior.

―Brillante doctora, simplemente brillante ―dijo Saul, abrumado por la información―. Quiero que por favor nos transmita todas sus conclusiones para hacérselas enviar a los expertos de la BN34, para que continúen el estudio de los bloques y la nave, basados en esa hipótesis.

―Por supuesto doctor ―dijo Faith sonrojada ―. Otra idea que se me ocurrió es que dado que su estructura debió ser tan frágil, es probable que hayan evolucionado muy rápidamente en el mar, a partir de organismos unicelulares, además de eso, el hecho de que el océano de este planeta, según he podido entender, esté congelado desde hace miles de millones de años; es posible que en las ciudades que se encuentran bajo él, podamos aun encontrar restos orgánicos de los antiguos, conservados gracias al congelamiento.

―Excelente, eso nos da mucho en que pensar, sobre como deberíamos orientar la exploración, quizá convendría centrarnos ahora en las ciudades que están bajo la capa de hielo de agua, en lugar de las superficiales ―concluyó Saul.

The Ancients (part 8)

-Eureka! -said Dr. Faith Ibraimovich suddenly, standing silently making notes in the back of the room, while the others speculated about the implications of what they had seen on the planet and the news coming from station BN34.

Several of them turned excitedly in the direction where the always silent woman was sitting, and they saw her with her eyes wide open watching them smiling, with an expression that seemed to be that of a madwoman.

-Are you all right, Doctor? -asked Saul, surprised at the attitude of the almost invisible woman.

-I think I understand, -she said, lifting her small, stubby blonde figure from the desk where she was sitting -. What if the Ancients, as we have called them, were a technobiological society.

-I think I understand your idea, doctor- said Carion, in his loud, vibrant, synthesized voice -. For several hundred thousand years we, the Inus, depended on the use of technological components to overcome our physiological limitations, that is before many decided to migrate definitively to a technological form of existence and finally abandoned existence in the tangible world.

-Right, that would explain the lack of complex processors or power and data transmission lines in the probes we have found, -the doctor continued.

-It means that the ships would dock with the individuals and the individuals would act as functional parts of the ships, -said Boris Chen, the chief engineer.

-Not exactly, - replied Ibraimovich-. That is what we would do, in a weak way we would dock with the ship, through neural interfaces or using our own hands and feet as interfaces to operate them, I mean a deeper dependence on technological devices.

-Please explain, Doctor- Saul demanded.

-Suppose the structure of the ancients was so fragile that they needed technological devices to live- said Ibrimovich -. That they should somehow resort to the use of technological devices as a way of evolving and being able to control their environment.

-And how that explains the probes, I still don't understand -intervened Da Silva, with the skepticism embodied in his face.

-And if they were not probes - replied Ibraimochich -. And if what we call probes were really the remains of the ancients, if they were their corpses.

Most of those present did not hide their expression of surprise, even from the point of view of Saul, the impassive digital face of Carion, seemed to be altered, in a minimum grimace of consternation.

-On what do you base your idea, doctor - asked Carducci, blushing from the task of having to process what Ibraimovich had just insinuated.

-It is simple- said Ibraimovich-. So far we have not found anything that clearly indicates to us what the morphology of the ancients was, it seems that all their architecture was geared to serve these strange ships or probes, which differ from each other...

-For a culture that builds ships in such quantity, -continued Ibaimovich-. As we have seen so far, it would be extremely difficult and inefficient to build such a variety, so that no two are the same. Perhaps the shape of the ship was an expression of the individual who inhabited it, or rather the way in which the individual showed himself to his fellows.

-I understand one way of showing one's own individuality, one expression of one's personality, -Carion sensed.

-Correct! -exclaimed ibraimovich cheerfully-. Then there is the lack of energy or data lines, as well as processors or fluid channels within the ships, where only the propulsion devices and the antimatter reactor differ from the construction with multifunctional blocks, - she continued -. That, together with the strange empty spaces, apparently lacking standard shapes that would indicate where the missing parts should have been, makes me think that those spaces should have been filled by organic matter, which with the passing of billions of years, has completely degraded, leaving only the space it occupied.

-It seems to me a very attractive hypothesis, but how does that lead us to consider the ships a corpse, more than a simple vehicle, -interrogated Saul.

-Suppose that your body is so fragile that it cannot withstand an environment very different from the one in which it has developed, and in order to propagate as a species, it needs an artificial mechanism to make it more resistant, as if to control its environment. It has the intellectual but not the physical means to proliferate, what does it do? -Ibraimovich asked rhetorically-. It creates those physical means, we humans have done it for tens of thousands of years, maybe these creatures developed their reasoning capacity, long before a body that allowed them to go along with their needs of intellectual exploration. And they must have, with what little they had, begun to provide themselves with the means to evolve...

-Like the hermit crabs, which take advantage of any empty mollusk shell they find in their path, to provide a better home for themselves. They began using tools they found in their environment until they were able to develop their own mechanisms to serve all their needs, and so over thousands of generations, they evolved into what we call multifunctional blocks.

-Amazing, your idea is fascinating, -said Saul, without leaving his stupor.

-The fact that the blocks have the capacity to interconnect, using tiny optical filaments and conduits, makes me think that perhaps the external membrane of these beings would also be provided with these filaments and conduits, which would allow them to make symbiosis with the blocks and thus form a unit, an individual.

-But the lack of a regular form to occupy in the probe ships would not make it difficult for the structure of a living being's body to accommodate itself in them, -intervened Da Silva even skeptically-. I understand that we living beings differ from each other, even among those of the same species, but our morphological differences are not as extreme as those we can see in the voids of the ships.

-It wouldn't be a problem if we thought about how the ships are built and how we build our own accessories- said Ibraimovich.

-I don't understand, -said Carducci in dismay.

-It's simple, our exoskeletons, the ones used by the army or in construction and mining, are shaped to complement our morphological structure, we have pistons and bellows to simulate muscles, titanium bars or carbon nanotubes, to simulate bones and processors and power and data lines, to simulate our nervous system; we are trying to imitate our own body, the same thing happens with the androids we build -she explained-. What if the ancients were a type of intellectually advanced colonial organism, the same individual, would be formed by the community of hundreds or thousands of smaller individuals, who would complement each other, but that their integration would be such that, together, they would form a single individuality. Such an organism would see the world as being made up of interchangeable individual blocks, which would complement each other to form a whole, it would not have specialized organs, each block would be a complete organism, which would live in symbiosis with the others to form a larger and intellectually superior organism.

-Brilliant doctor, simply brilliant-- Saul said, overwhelmed by the information-. I want you to please pass on all your conclusions to the BN34 experts, so that they can continue the study of the blocks and the ship, based on that hypothesis.

-Of course, Doctor -said Faith blushingly-. Another idea that occurred to me is that since their structure must have been so fragile, it is likely that they evolved very quickly in the sea, from single-cell organisms, in addition to that, the fact that the ocean of this planet, as I have been able to understand, is frozen for billions of years; it is possible that in the cities that are under it, we can still find organic remains of the ancient ones, preserved thanks to the freezing.

-Excellent, that gives us a lot to think about, how we should direct our exploration, perhaps we should focus now on the cities under the water ice, rather than the surface ones - Saul concluded.
