Los Antiguos (parte 3)

―Se trata de un planeta casi completamente inundado ―explicaba Richard Lieberman, representante de la misión científica la flota en la estación BN34 ―. La evaluación de las sondas indica que originalmente tuvo al menos dos continentes emergidos, pero en algún momento hace cien o ciento cincuenta millones de años, ocurrió algún cambio que altero el clima o la geología del planeta, lo que provocó el aumento del nivel oceánico o el hundimiento de los continentes, aún no está claro.

―¿Cuáles son las condiciones de habitabilidad del planeta? ― preguntó Reinaldo Mateus, uno de los catedráticos provenientes de Palas, que recién había llegado a la estación.

―El planeta es completamente estéril ―respondió Lieberman ―. Aunque su atmósfera podría soportar la vida y hay abundante agua líquida; no existe vida a ninguna escala, ni se ha encontrado presencia de compuestos orgánicos de moléculas complejas.

―Entonces, ¿cómo es que hay ruinas de una civilización avanzada en él? ―intervino bruscamente, Martín Benítez, otro de los catedráticos llegados de Palas ―. Eso no tiene sentido.

―Tal parece que hubo algún evento que acabó con la vida del planeta, afectándola a nivel molecular ―continuó Lieberman, serenamente ―. Las sondas mostraron la presencia de colonias fosilizadas de criaturas submarinas, parecidas a nuestros corales. Hay grandes regiones del fondo oceánico cubierto con estas estructuras, lo que revela que si debió haber abundancia de vida en algún momento de la historia del planeta.

―¿Cuándo arribará la nave que fue descubierta previamente? ―preguntó Saul, quien permanecía impaciente, escuchando el reporte de Lieberman.

―Está en camino, probablemente arribe mañana, removerla de la locación del accidente, fue más complicado de lo que se esperaba ―explicó Lieberman.

―Y ¿Cuándo nos darán acceso a ella? ―continuó Saul.

―Inmediatamente doctor Smith ―respondió ―. Tan pronto esté aquí, tendrán acceso inmediato.

La nave fue llevada al módulo central de la estación espacial, por lo que, quienes trabajarán en ella deberían hacerlo en microgravedad. Su tecnología era muy diferente cualquier cosa que hubiesen visto antes, en muchos aspectos casi tan avanzada como la humana o incluso la inu, pero en otros obsoleta e incluso podría decirse que arcaica.

Había varios huecos, como si faltasen mecanismos o dispositivos electrónicos, pero no parecía haber sido saqueada o alterada, era sólo como si hubiesen desaparecido, cuestiones tan esenciales como las líneas de transmisión de datos de los sistemas de cómputo, procesadores de datos, dispositivos de soporte vital, y sistemas de procesamiento de alimentos y de desechos, eran algunos de los componentes aparentemente desaparecidos.

Otra característica curiosa de la tecnología de la nave era que estaba conformada casi en su totalidad por módulos multifuncionales autónomos, bloques de aproximadamente dos centímetros cúbicos de volumen, que tenían la cualidad de fusionarse complementándose unos a otros para cumplir cualquier función mecánica que fuese requerida, por lo que los identificaron como precursores de las nanomáquinas.

En cuanto a la morfología de los usuarios de la máquina, se trataba de todo un misterio, no existía nada que pareciese ser una cabina, habitaciones o áreas que pudiesen adaptarse, como para el uso de una tripulación, por lo que se concluyó que la nave era en realidad una sonda robótica.

En lo que respecta a la energía de la nave era proporcionada por un reactor de antimateria y la propulsión parecía provenir de un motor de iones, alimentado por el mismo reactor, lo que debía proporcionarle una aceleración lenta pero constante, por lo que los viajes debían ser muy prolongados, así que posiblemente el mundo de origen de la sonda no estuviese muy distante.

Un logro importante fue descubrir que, si bien todo el sistema de procesamiento de datos de la sonda había desaparecido, el almacenamiento de los datos, era realizado en bloques de cristal mediante lo que parecía ser tecnología holográfica, algo completamente obsoleto para los humanos e inus. La tarea de descifrar el contenido de los cristales sería la labor de un equipo de criptólogos, lingüistas, psicólogos y arqueólogos, tanto de la academia de Palas como de Heracles y Dione.

Saul, se auto abrogó el liderazgo del equipo de arqueólogos encargados de interpretar la información sobre la cultura de los Antiguos, como fueron llamados, debido a la datación de la sonda, que ahora se estimaba en más de mil millones, debido a las formaciones geológicas, en las que se encontraba incrustada. Sin embargo, el equipo de arqueólogos, que en realidad se trataba de Saul y otros dos expertos, compañeros de la misma facultad de Palas, no tenía precisamente mucho que hacer, pues de momento, todo el trabajo estaba en manos de los criptólogos y lingüistas.

Mientras en la estación, la misión científica se hacia cargo de tratar de entender el funcionamiento de la sonda, y en el planeta donde se había descubierto las ruinas, empezaban a definirse estrategias para explorarlas; a pocas decenas de años luz, más allá de donde se daban estos descubrimientos, una sonda de exploración hacía un nuevo y espectacular hallazgo. Al aproximarse a un agujero negro, descubrió, en primer lugar, que a su alrededor orbitaban a una distancia de aproximadamente un decimo de año luz, un pequeño sistema planetario, el cual asombrosamente debió orbitar a la estrella gigante cuyo colapso originó el cadáver estelar.

Encontrar este sistema, si bien no era algo esperado, tampoco era del todo novedoso, lo importante del hallazgo era haber encontrado restos de una civilización en uno de los planetas del sistema y más aun la presencia de insipientes restos de vida vegetal petrificada.

Pero el hallazgo más impresionante de todo fue el echo de que, lo se pensaba era un agujero negro, se trataba de un objeto cuya existencia se consideraba hipotética, una estrella negra. Una forma de remanente estelar que pudo ser teorizada como producto de la teoría clásica de la gravedad y se consideraba una alternativa a los agujeros negros, pero que tras varios milenios de conocer éstos, estudiarlos y catalogar varias decenas de ellos; se había olvidado.

Ahora, las proximidades al bulbo galáctico revelaba una nueva maravilla, un objeto desconocido tanto para humanos como para inus; una estrella negra y una civilización ancestral, probablemente desaparecida hace miles de millones de años.

The Ancients (part 3)

-It's an almost completely flooded planet, -explained Richard Lieberman, representative of the scientific mission fleet at the BN34 station-. The evaluation of the probes indicates that originally it had at least two emerged continents, but at some point a hundred or a hundred and fifty million years ago, some change occurred that altered the climate or the geology of the planet, which caused the increase of the ocean level or the sinking of the continents, it is still not clear.

-What are the conditions of habitability of the planet,? -asked Reinaldo Mateus, one of the professors coming from Palas, who had just arrived at the station.

-The planet is completely sterile, - answered Lieberman-. Although its atmosphere could support life and there is abundant liquid water; there is no life on any scale, nor has the presence of organic compounds of complex molecules been found.

-So how come there are ruins of an advanced civilization on it? -intervened abruptly, Martin Benitez, another of the professors who had come from Palas-. That doesn't make sense.

-It seems that there was some event that ended the life of the planet, affecting it at the molecular level, -continued Lieberman, calmly-. The probes showed the presence of fossilized colonies of underwater creatures, similar to our corals. Large regions of the ocean floor are covered with these structures, revealing whether there must have been an abundance of life at some point in the planet's history.

-When will the ship that was previously discovered arrive?. -asked Saul, who remained impatient, listening to Lieberman's report.

-It's on its way, probably arriving tomorrow. Removing it from the crash site was more complicated than expected,-explained Lieberman.

-And when will we get access to it? -Saul continued.

-Immediately, Dr. Smith, -he replied-. As soon as it is here, you will have immediate access.

The ship was taken to the central module of the space station, so those who will work on it should do so in microgravity. Their technology was very different from anything they had seen before, in many ways almost as advanced as human or even IUA, but in others obsolete and even arguably archaic.

There were several gaps, as if there were missing mechanisms or electronic devices, but it did not seem to have been looted or altered, it was just as if they had disappeared, issues as essential as the data transmission lines of computer systems, data processors, life support devices, and food and waste processing systems, were some of the components apparently missing.

Another curious feature of the spacecraft technology was that it was almost entirely made up of autonomous multifunctional modules, blocks of approximately two cubic centimeters in volume, which had the quality of fusing together to complement each other to fulfill whatever mechanical function was required, so they were identified as precursors to nanomachines.

As for the morphology of the machine's users, it was a complete mystery; there was nothing that seemed to be a cabin, rooms or areas that could be adapted, as for the use of a crew, so it was concluded that the ship was in fact a robotic probe.

As far as the energy of the ship was concerned it was provided by an antimatter reactor and the propulsion seemed to come from an ion engine, fed by the same reactor, which should provide a slow but constant acceleration, so the trips should be very long, so possibly the world of origin of the probe was not very distant.

A major achievement was to discover that, although the probe's entire data processing system had disappeared, the data storage was done in glass blocks using what appeared to be holographic technology, something completely obsolete for humans and inus. The task of deciphering the contents of the crystals would be the work of a team of cryptologists, linguists, psychologists and archaeologists, both from the academy of Palas and from Heracles and Dione.

Saul, self-appointed leader of the team of archaeologists in charge of interpreting the information about the culture of the Ancients, as they were called, due to the dating of the probe, now estimated at over a billion, due to the geological formations, in which it was embedded. However, the team of archaeologists, which was actually Saul and two other experts, colleagues from the same faculty as Palas, did not exactly have much to do, since for the time being, all the work was in the hands of cryptologists and linguists.

While at the station, the scientific mission was in charge of trying to understand the operation of the probe, and on the planet where the ruins had been discovered, strategies were beginning to be defined to explore them; a few tens of light years away, beyond where these discoveries were made, an exploration probe was making a new and spectacular discovery. Approaching a black hole, it discovered, first, that around it orbited at a distance of approximately one tenth of a light year, a small planetary system, which amazingly must have orbited the giant star whose collapse originated the stellar corpse.

To find this system, although it was not something expected, neither was totally new, the important thing of the finding was to have found remains of a civilization in one of the planets of the system and even more the presence of insipient remains of petrified vegetal life.

But the most impressive finding of all was the fact that, what was thought was a black hole, it was an object whose existence was considered hypothetical, a black star. A form of stellar remnant that could be theorized as a product of the classic theory of gravity and was considered an alternative to black holes, but after several millennia of knowing them, studying them and cataloguing several dozen of them; it had been forgotten.

Now, the vicinity of the galactic bulb revealed a new wonder, an object unknown to both humans and inus; a black star and an ancient civilization, probably extinct billions of years ago.
