Who Will Own Mars Or Any Other Planets We Colonise?

The other day I was talking about the idea of colonisation of other planets and how we are at the cusp of doing just that, starting with the Moon and Mars in the 2020s and 2030s. As I was talking about it, I realised something.

In the beginning, our mission would be to find habitable planets for us or make them habitable if we can do so (as in the case of Mars), so that we can expand our presence in the cosmos and finally become a spacefaring civilisation.

But as we set up things more and more start establishing colonies on these celestial bodies, an interesting conundrum will appear. Who is supposed to be incharge?

Down here on Earth, there are fixed geographical boundaries and governments of nations run things, and there is rule of law. But what about these other planets? If some country reaches a planet first, could it claim the whole planet to itself?

The Outer Space Treaty

There exists something called the Outer Space Treaty that more than a hundred countries are a part of. This treaty prohibits the member countries to claim any celestial body for itself.

Article II of the treaty specifically states this. “Outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means”.

But there are lots of questions still. First, the treaty itself is more of a guideline and not a law. However nations seem to be following it in fear of actions from the others. Second, although the treaty states that governments are supposed to monitor private entities (SpaceX, for example), nothing stops them from actually going to Mars and claiming it!

What about when multiple private entities land there and start fighting over the planet? Are we to repeat the same story there too? And what about governance? If we are to have a self sustaining population there, we will need a system. Who will be in charge? Will the people in charge be independent from Earth’s laws?

A One World People?

Sometimes I wonder what the future of the human race will be like. Will be become even more divided or become more and more united? I mean, technology has already rendered national boundaries meaningless as we are closer together than ever before.

In five hundred years from now or maybe even a thousand, could it be that the whole of Earth unites to become one? Such a system could bring utopia or dystopia to the planet, depending on how its done and more importantly, handled.

But let’s say if things go right and we do indeed become one people, just like the sci-fi movies, then it would make space exploration much easy. There wouldn’t be any question of whom the celestial bodies belong to or whom the infinite resources of the universe belong to.

We would be one and wherever we go, we could claim it for humanity, of course, not harming any other life forms that might already exist there because then we would just be conquerors and would ensue another series of wars.

Sort:

Colonizing Mars could very well be humanity's second chance of rebuilding a proper and organised society, one which relies on cooperation rather than competition. The way I see it, we could go two ways:

  1. Earth 2.0 - As the name suggests, we would just implement our same laws on Earth, again on Mars and practice the same government and the rules. All that would change are the resources.

  2. A Potentially Better World - Even though Mars may not have the same amount of resources, it could be a very good excuse to start life all over again. To plan things out beforehand, and still keep room for improvising. To give away the power to the people and not just the authorities to keep balance in decision making for the future of mankind.

I sure hope things are done right when we start on Mars. I would hate it if we spend billions of dollars to make a new home for us and start the same nonsense there too!

you are thinking about what would be the life on moon and mars in 2020 & 2030 but first we dont know will we be alive or not then after it we think about
as just u explained in your post
but It is very excieting as life on moon and mars

Yeah, we got to figure out how to stay alive first and I think we will figure that out. We will have to if we are to expand into the cosmos.

this is amazing, some time ago I never thought what if the earth is only one rule and if there is one president ...
but what is it possible ...
I have no idea...

Yeah, in the future we might have such a world.

No men can own any planet, that's is nature :D

I hope so. It would be a total dictatorship.

You would enjoy the expanse books and TV show. Amazon just picked up the show, after Syfy cancelled it, for the 4th season.
In the expanse, earth and moon are run by the UN, Mars is a republic and the outer planets are fought over by earth and Mars.

wow! I could I have missed this. Will be sure to check it out asap. Sounds very interesting.

Thanks for this!

Hi, @sauravrungta! Please take a minute and check out my new Steemit t-shirt design. I was working on it for a long time and hope that it is nice.

It looks like an awesome design!

We will never be one and the colonies will probably be claimed by the people who inhabit the place. If people are there rules will be needed and they will be established by a sovereign country here.

In a more distant future, I think we will be one because it seems like a natural progression of civilisations. We are all one after all and maybe something or the other will make us realise it. Maybe even a common threat of some kind.

That's the only way I see it. It has to be an alien invasion or something like that. People are just too different for me to see us be one. I'm not saying we can't have peace but having peace and being one are totally different.

According to me there are two options:

  1. Someone with big military power
  2. Someone with big amount of money to hire mercenaries/army and after that sill be very rich :p
  3. EVENTUALY-> Someone who is good in manipulating people to force them to spend money on army and obey his/hers orders

Of course I hope that is not going to happen, but who knows...

For now the Space Treaty prohibits all that but who knows how things will change when going to Mars wouldn't be that big of a deal and literally anyone could do it!

Wonderful design you are creative
